DEAD RAVEN CHOIR
'Schmerzensgewalt' CD
Genre:black metal/noise/outsider
DEAD RAVEN CHOIR is one of the most obscure, hated, envied and enigmatic musical entities in the world. 'Schmerzensgewalt' is said to mark the
final chapter in this bizarre and wondrous fable.
Smolken, the mastermind behind both DEAD RAVEN CHOIR and WOLFMANGLER, claims that he is setting his sights on pastures new and that this
challenging work is to be perhaps the very final testament of the spirit of Dead Raven Choir. Equally as lo-fi and harsh as its AB released
predecessor 'My Firstborn Will Surely Be Blind', 'Schmerzensgewalt' shares the same ambivalence to the technologies of the modern world -
"Recorded in Poland on cheap and archaic Soviet Bloc technology" - and a desire to tear songs limb from limb, note by note, before reassembling
them in a crude mockery of what stood before.
Particularly noteworthy this time is the inclusion of 16 year old female Polish vocalists, accompanied by their parents to record at the eerie
forest bunker that serves as Smolken's lair, their naive delivery adding new unplumbed depths to the Dead Raven Choir sound.
Probably AB's most extreme release ever, this was held up my numerous queries regarding the audio master, which was so distorted and compressed that they believed it to be faulty twice, exclaiming "It barely
registers as audio!" What better epitaph could there be for this astounding entity?

Genre:post-Black Metal
The Montreal duo MENACE RUINE release their eagerly awaited fourth opus on Aurora Borealis.

CONAN
'Horseback Battle Hammer' digi CD
Genre:Caveman Battle Doom
The excellent debut CD in a digipack sleeve with metallic ink,
CONAN are a Caveman Battle Doom trio from the grim North of England. They summon the heavy riff from the ungodly land and crush the skull of the unbeliever with their low end doom assault. Waves of sludge and galloping crust passages overwhelm the unwary.
'Horseback Battle Hammer' is comprised of four long and crushing tracks recorded at Wales' mighty Foel Studio (Hawkwind, Electric Wizard, Godflesh etc.) The sound is
monolithic, and clearly the band made the very best use of this legendary studio to get remearkable results from their custom made gear for a truly
crushing debut release. Combining excellent production values, deadly riffs and a unique vocal style, Horseback Battle Hammer stays with the listener like a fresh wound.
With artwork by Tony Roberts (Electric Wizard, Unearthly Trance, Cathedral, etc.), Conan have set in stone the majesty of their arrival.

by Russian occult artist Denis Kostromitin, this is a beautiful edition of this incredible record.

into territories unknown.

YRSEL
'Requiem for the Three Kharites' CD
ABX039
Genre:doom/drone/electronic
YRSEL create complex, multi layered and highly atmospheric music that fully explodes the genres of drone, doom, and electronica resulting in a glorious glacial melt of sound and texture.
YRSEL is a collaboration between THE AUSTRASIAN GOAT, primarily an
experimental Doom/Black Metal project, and ONDO, an equally prolific dark electronica project.
Conceptually, the album deals with the Three Graces (Kharites) of Greekmythology, symbols of grace, beauty, pleasure, and the creative impulse.
A requiem for the loss of culture in an ever spiraling material world, a twilight ode to the mythic manifestation of our higher faculties. In this context the drones, glitches and whispersform the perfect soundtrack to such dark materials. The album dissolves slowly from its thunderous opening, finally leaving the listener in a deep void of palpable loss.
Aurora Borealis is very proud to release this excellent album, presented as a deluxe silkscreened CD package in an edition of just 500.
Tracklist:
The last visions of Aglaea 20:18
The tears of Euphrosyne 16:11
Thaleia's neurasthenia 17:19

FAUNA
'The Hunt' CD
ABX038
Genre: shamanic black metal
FAUNA return with 'The Hunt'. Originally self-released in an extremely limited run, this official release on Aurora Borealis has the addition of live drums and has been fully remastered
by Mell Detmer (Earth, Sunn O))), etc), standing as the definitive version.
'The Hunt' sees FAUNA further expand upon their aesthetic as they head further into the dark core of man, the spirit of the original man of prehistory. The album chronicles the search
of primitive man for food, though displays the magical reverence, wonder and visceral horror of such an undertaking in a world of animism.
Musically the album defines a progressive course for the band with increased use of synthesizers and extended atmospheric passages building the tension. The live drums and full remaster
also greatly expand the sound, adding an urgency to the proceedings, especially in the more traditional Black Metal sections.
'The Hunt' further solidifies FAUNA's mythic status as true pioneers on a musical trail that at once reaches out into our collective past and forward to what might be.
Presented on CD in a black hand silkscreened heavy card Arigato pack with hand screened 4 panel insert.

L'ACEPHALE
'Malefeasance' 2LP
Genre: black metal/noise/experimental
The long awaited vinyl version is finally here... 180g black vinyl double LP with a giant fold out double sided poster (90cm x 60cm), 20pp full colour booklet as with the CD, and all housed in matte LP sleeve with 5mm spine and poly outer bag. This is a weighty and exquisite release, limited to only 500. ABX032.
In the wake of their polarising first AB release,'Mord und Totschlag', L'ACEPHALE return with 'Malefeasance', a lengthy and complex affair that further explores their fascinations and strikes headlong into the darkest of musical vistas. The journey this time is perhaps even more academic: further ethnographic audio elements are now present, more spacious passages, a deeper approach.
The album begins with 'Vainamoinen Nacht', a distinctly ambient and largely gentle piece, as warping tones begin to collide with the intoning of the Eddas and Slavic choirs. 'Hitori Bon Odori' continues themes found on 'Mord und Totschlag', repetitive acoustic riffing, joining with vocal chants and some executioner's snare rolls. 'A Burned Village' is a more Black Metal track, slow martial drums and staccato riffing, with layers of vocal and even some aetherial keyboard. Perhaps these last two tracks best show the nature of Set Sothis' collaborations with Markus Wolff (Waldteufel, Crash Worship), sharing some of his vocal and percussive styles. 'From A Miserable Abode' takes us into more familiar L'ACEPHALE territory as droning distorted guitar is swallowed gradually and ineffably under panning layers of shrieked vocals, swathes of electronic noise and maelstrom before passing over into Tibetan ritual music like some horrific and excoriating funerary rite.
The album continues with 'Sleep Has His House', a near 15 minute track of feedback scree cut through with repetitive heavy handed strumming and culminating in a curiously intoned vocal piece that recalls prime SWANS.
Album closer 'Nothing is True, Everything is Permitted' is a knowing 23 minutes with some of the quietest moments on the album, as dreamlike interludes pass into arcs of harsh noise followed by acoustic guitars before once again entering the dream state, a field recording from beyond consciousness.
By no means do L'ACEPHALE make music for the casual listener, nor will this album appeal to all, in many ways they transcend the listener's preconceived ideas of what may be expected: L'ACEPHALE are perhaps most successful at operating beyond the constraints of genre altogether, and 'Malefeasance', with its dark, dreamlike and harrowing atmospheres, is their testament.

BURIAL HEX/ZOLA JESUS
split LP
Genre: horror electronics
Aurora Borealis is very proud to release this split LP by two of Wisconsin's finest exports, Burial Hex and Zola Jesus.
Burial Hex presents two works here, following up on the critically acclaimed Initiations CD and 2LP of 2008. The first track
'Go Crystal Tears' is the first outing for the new Burial Hex sound and highlights influences such as 80s horror synth master
John Carpenter and Goblin coming to the fore and blending with the almost black metal vocal style and "horror electronics" so
successfully developed on Initiations. The second track 'Temple of the Flood', clocking in at a more usual 14 and a half minutes,
is one of the final old-style Burial Hex tracks and proceeds in a style reminiscent of previous works with heavily processed
analogue electronics and synths up until around seven minutes in where things take an unexpected turn with eroding layers of
primitive percussion, water drops, and almost Martin Denny-style exotica piano runs before ending in a deluge of sub bass and
redemptive church organ.
Zola Jesus expands on the works presented on the 7 inch releases with a 19 minute track that blends all the trademark sounds of
this young Madison genius. Nika (aka Zola Jesus) plays and writes all her own material, though is joined here by Dead Luke, who
also plays as part of the Zola Jesus' live sound. Nika's voice, reminiscent of a teenage Diamanda Galas or a more deranged Beth
Ditto, soars and wails within an ever changing cloud of pulsing synths and analogue electronics up until the eight
minute mark where a naive electronic drum pattern kicks in and is joined by a warm synth line. For some minutes the track takes a
tuneful No Wave turn before gradually shifting again into a darker and more menacing beast. This is stunning stuff - expect more
from Zola Jesus on Aurora Borealis in the future.

SYLVESTER ANFANG II
'Sylvester Anfang II' double vinyl
Genre: Funeral Folk/psych rock
Second pressing: 180g double LP in a matte heavyweight gatefold. Side A/B: transparent red vinyl. Side C/D: transparent green vinyl. Edition of 350.
In the time since the release of "Kosmies Slachtafval", Silvester Anfang have grown into SYLVESTER ANFANG II, a more psychedelic
beast, a more tangible creature in some ways, but one that defies and confounds standard classification. Taking their cue from
Krautrock communes of yore, the Flemish troubadours have expanded both ranks and minds and now present this giant new opus for
general consumption. With cultish numbers swollen with new blood in the guise of Stef Anus (Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat),
Father Sloow (Sloow Tapes pontiff), Bram (Ignatz) and Clay Ruby (Davenport, Burial Hex), the sound is much fuller and more
reminiscent of Krautish dope jams then ever before. Ruby's vocal additions create a whole new universe for the band, rather like
if Dr John had been born in a plague pit in Flanders, and the resulting tracks 'The Devil Always Shits in the Same Graves' parts
1 & 2 are masterful examples of Flemish voodoo boogie.
The new material is more hypnotic than before, and the band are sure to add new members to their fan cult as they slink across
Europe like a fog in the coming months. Sure to upset parents and upstanding citizens with their occult themes and liberal
European-style artwork, SYLVESTER ANFANG II reach new levels of consciousness with their mantras of goat worship and the
orthodoxy of denial that states "Only analog is real". Dust off your robes, sharpen the sacrificial blade, order in some
Trappist beers... Tune in, turn on, evolve.

HEAVY WINGED
'Waking Shaking' LP
Genre: out rock/heavy psych
Heavy Winged make their Aurora Borealis debut with this vinyl only release. The Shaking, Waking LP consists of two lengthy tracks: "Tidal Blackness" is a 23 minute cloud of improvised guitar and bass drone, underpinned with sparse percussive elements and dappled with the rays of ethereal melodies. This track, recorded live in Oakland in 2008, represents the more gentle side of Heavy Winged in some ways and is largely soothing. The second side harbors "Morning Flesh", 18 minutes that veer towards the caveman Krautrock of the recent Alive In My Mouth LP, drums pounding, Neanderthal guitar chugging, though with a melodic haze drifting across the musical landscape like a lysergic mistral, leading the listener ever further into the shifting sands of the forbidden zone.
Heavy Winged have set the controls for the heart of the unknown.
Presented as a 180g transparent grey vinyl LP, black inner bag, heavyweight matte outer sleeve. Limited to 500. ABX036.

ATAVIST
'II: Ruined' 2LP
Genre: epic suicidal doom
Finally.... ATAVIST "II: Ruined" is available on heavyweight 180gm vinyl in a matte gatefold sleeve.
ATAVIST 'II:Ruined' defines pure epic suicidal sludge doom metal.
The bands second album, 'II:Ruined', is a massive, monolithic, introverted chapter of audial suffering and torment. It sees Atavist plunge further into the audial abyss by incorporating more layers and substance to their art
(not unlike the way Japans Corrupted portray their immaculate aesthetic). Heavier, more diverse, intricate, and melodic, 'II:Ruined' is just that; an unforgiving observation of self-reflection, repentance, and desperation.
With guest performances from Justin Greaves, (ex-Iron Monkey, Crippled Black Phoenix), and dark folk/rock/doomster Rose Kemp, (who's 'Unholy Majesty' LP saw release in 2008 on Aurora Borealis), 'II:Ruined' is a decidedly
darker beast, lurking in the shadows, evading the casual listener and rewarding the devotee.
This double vinyl edition of 'II:Ruined' on Aurora Borealis marks a long overdue vinyl release for this important milestone of extreme doom in the UK, and stands in monolithic testament
to their achievement. - LAST FEW COPIES!

K11
'Voices From Thelema' CD
Genre: instrumental transcommunication/ambient/experimental
K 11 is a project of Italian sound/installation artist Pietro Riparbelli that deals with the world of radio signals, trans-communication and other
invisible phenomena, to create a dimension where the only sound sources are signals from shortwave radio receivers. When constructing works under
the K 11 project, Riparbelli uses only sounds from the atmosphere and from invisible, unknown sources. In this way, Riparbelli creates more esoteric
works than his field recording based material as PT-R, and 'Voices From Thelema' is perhaps the logical conclusion of such an enterprise.
'Voices from Thelema' is an instrumental trans-communication action with short wave radio receivers realized inside Thelema Abbey in Cefal, October 14, 2007.
The ruined building stands derelict and on the verge of collapse, though still holds many secrets and has been a focus for much counter cultural activity since its
foundation by Aleister Crowley in 1920 as a religious centre and commune where he could instruct disciples in his emerging Thelemic religion and systems of magick
in a rural atmosphere, far from the overpowering prevailing morality of England. Activities included meditation and ritual magick, as well as the sensationalised
drug taking and sex magick. The wall of many of the rooms were painted with fantastic murals by Crowley himself, depicting many of the elementals and
demons encountered in his magickal exercises, and the remains of many of these adorn the accompanying booklet. After being ejected from Italy following
scandal and outcry over the goings on at the Abbey, the walls were whitewashed and destroyed. Filmmaker Kenneth Anger, himself a devotee of Crowley, later
uncovered and filmed some of its murals in his film 'Thelema Abbey' (1955), now considered lost, and the Abbey has been a place of pilgrimage for many ever since.
K 11 now revisits this site and seeks to uncover the genius loci, the very essence of the building itself, to reach out into the aether and construct meaning and reality from
that which is beyond our grasp. The three tracks are the result of this work and, each bearing titles of Thelemic significance, can be said to hold the essence of
all that remains at Cefalu, like the background radiation that tells of the Big Bang.
DO WHAT THOU WILT SHALL BE THE WHOLE OF THE LAW
Presented as a deluxe CD digipack, with glued in 32 page booklet featuring exclusive documentary photographs from the recording process at Thelema Abbey. The disc also features a
short film shot on location at the Abbey during the recording. You can read a great review at Judas Kiss.

FAUNA
"Rain" CD
Genre: Apocalyptic atavism
Aurora Borealis is proud to present 'Rain' by the ultra obscure FAUNA. Based in the temperate rainforest region of
the Pacific Northwest, FAUNA are a strongly eco-centric two piece band working in the black metal genre. 'Rain'
consists of one epic track lasting over an hour. Beginning with a field recording of rain in a forest, the piece
thereafter becomes an acoustic journey, sung vocals complete this section before a raw black metal surge of power
and pummel. FAUNA create honest, atavistic music in dark times for humanity and the world that nurtures us.
we are very proud to present "Rain" as a CD with matte insert, housed in a black heavyweight cardstock hand screened card package, with black artwork. ABX027 - FINAL COPIES.

JOURNEY TO IXTLAN
s/t CD
Genre: New Age Doom/Occult Desert Rock
Finally, the cult is revealed!
Pan pipes carry on the air as the eagle circles the mesa, your mouth full of sand and peyote mulch as the sun beats down. Riding out of the
desert like the ghosts of future past in a dune buggy powered by dreams come JOURNEY TO IXTLAN. Totally heavy, very psychedelic, and utterly sun kissed this is the sound
of New Age Doom & Occult Desert Rock.
JOURNEY TO IXTLAN are an anonymous badass rock band of desert dwellers, in some cases living outside the law at the very margins of society, who converge infrequently to
render their physical surroundings in psychotropic sound. Their heavy sound owes as much to Doom Metal as it does to Psychedelia, as much to Now as it does to Then, as
guitar, bass, drums, keys and vocal chants intertwine like shamanic smoke. To listen to JOURNEY TO IXTLAN is to participate in a ritual out of time, to tread the path of
Don Juan, to lay on the mesa as a 'man of power' and be touched by the sun at the heart of the cosmic stage.
Truly a very special album, and we here at Aurora Borealis are proud to present it as beautiful matte finish mini gatefold, with printed inner spine.

BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL
'A Feral Spirit' 180g double LP
Deluxe 180g double LP, with A2 poster, edition of 1000. ABX026.
Initial quantities come with a ritually blessed Elk hide patch.
Chet W. Scott - all instruments, chants and incantations.
Aurora Borealis proudly presents BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL 'A Feral Spirit'. Following on from the debut self-titled album on Bindrune Records in 2006,
a primitive fusion of slow tempo Earth Metal & Woodland Ritualistic Doom, an ode to the more destructive and primal elements found in not only nature,
but in Black Metal and trance inducing Funeral Doom as well, 'A Feral Spirit' takes the journey further into the heart of the forest. Combining Native American
shamanic influence and the Germanic nature worship of his own heritage with an entirely transcendent musical vision, BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL gives praise to the
spirits of nature and the unspoken bonds that tie man, beast and environment. With elements of Doom Metal, ambient, ritual and native musics in evidence throughout
the album, BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL involve the listener in a timeless and spiritually expansive journey of discovery, evaluation and reflection over the course of the
album's 71 minutes. "A personal cleansing woven through audible passages of earthbound ritualistic transcendence"...
With its rigid stand against modernity and monotheism, 'A Feral Spirit' is a clarion call for the rebirth of the human animal spirit and a return to the ancestral
forests of our past. BLOOD OF THE BLACK OWL shall lead them...
Proudly presented by Aurora Borealis as a deluxe 180g double LP in a satin matte finish gatefold, with poster. Ships in poly bag with LPs outside of sleeve so as to avoid seam splits.

Wraiths are the dead in their lime-pits and the dying in their beds.
Wraiths are the horror of infection.
Wraiths exclusively utilize found & re-structured equipment, location acoustics and human vocals.
No computers or synthesizers are used in any Wraiths recording or live event.
"The death ambient textures and shifting, acidic tones stretch across a punishing forty minutes, maintaining an evolving narrative of painful,
cumulous distortion. Wraiths dispense sounds from the very darkest recesses of doom metal but with all the defined edges of conventional
instrumentation smudged and corroded, leaving only a vast, looming shadow in their place." - Boomkat.
This has been out of print for a long time now, but I got some copies back from the distributor. - FINAL NINE COPIES!

BEN NASH
'the seventh goodbye' CD
Ben Nash - All vocals, instruments, percussion, recording and production.
Listening to BEN NASH's debut full-length "The Seventh Goodbye", its hard to remember that this is indeed his first full album, here and now, in 2008. Nash's music has the assurance and character of a musician far beyond his 23 years, let alone the sheer multi-disciplinary skill, and yet its largely warm and welcoming, and with an entirely timeless character all its own.
Ben Nash first came to AB's attention having picked up a self-released cassette from the Sheffield based distro and label Blackest Rainbow (who have pressed a ltd vinyl version of this release). It was immediately apparent that this was something very special and we pretty quickly offered to work with Ben on a future release. After several more tapes and CDrs, both self-released and on various micro-labels, growing in scope and ambition with every release, and a series of strange geographical and linguistic synchronicities, Ben finally got in touch about a full-length release.
So here it is: "The Seventh Goodbye". Clocking in at 34 minutes, its not an overly long album, but rather one that demands repeated listenings, a collage of so many layers, patterns and textures so as to be as dazzling as the plummage of the finest peacock in paradise. Musical elements as diverse as folk, raga, Eastern percussion, drone, prog and noise collide and coalesce as the album unfolds, with each of the eight tracks providing new twists and turns, with never an element out of place.
The slow beginning of opener 'KUAD 9873' is a drone and vocal drenched movie score, chiming Western guitars building and dissolving in the sun before we move into the more unforgiving nocturnal territory of 'Night Call'; wind instruments trade cries with guitar scree, whispers and piano. Title track 'The Seventh Goodbye' is largely guitar based, with multiple tracks, rolling percussion, layered vocals and saxophone. That this should all be the work of one man is quite astounding, and its clear that comparisons with BEN CHASNY and VOICE OF THE SEVEN WOODS are more than mere flattery. 'Resolution' plays counter point to the drama of the previous track, a relatively short piece of solo guitar, psychologically much lighter.
'Smoke and Flattery' is largely percussive, with a variety of singing bowls, shakers, gongs and cymbals, before a vocal drone, handclaps and a simple bassline come in. Its perhaps the most Krautrock moment on the album, reminiscent of POPOL VUH, before the rhythms and melody dissipate into the ether as the track segues into 'Magnetophone 8 PtII', a slow building and intense piece with a fantastic distorted guitar climax boiling over into a wash of reverb drone. 'What will always be PtII' is the most beautiful track on the album, worthy of JACK ROSE or any other of the current cream of the solo guitar raga worshippers. No sooner have we grown accustomed to the beauty and light however, we find ourselves in the company of 'Angel #7', alone in the woods, the cries of the night creatures piercing the ringing in our ears. Its a strange journey indeed, full of many conflicting emotions, but one that you will instinctively take again and again. May it never end.
"a real beauty. Throughout there is mostly Ben's acoustic guitar picking - elegiac ragas similar to James Blackshaw. Side 2 opens with the meditative "Smoke & Flattery" - singing bowls, grizzled oms and incense-wreathed atmosphere. The rest of the side continues in cosmically dazed fashion with the next track sounding like Led Zep's more enchanted and folkier moments on the falling into the bliss of sleep. Highly recommended." - BOA MELODY BAR

BURIAL HEX
'Initiations' CD
Clay Ruby. (feedback, voice, PAIA 4700, samples, microphones, homemade oscillators, metal, organs, earth, distortion, delay, insect, reverb, electric piano and analog tape)
Burial Hex first made itself known to Aurora Borealis a few years ago when browsing obscure blackened electronic treats online. The subsequent purchase delivered a rather bizarre cassette tape, totally without markings, and a cryptic, darkly printed simple cover bearing ancient symbols and occult schematics: "Curses of the Earth" indeed. It conjured all sorts of imaginings - nocturnal rites, lonely vigils with archaic analogue equipment, moonlight, madness...
In 2007 Aurora Borealis found itself face to face with Burial Hex across the strings of the ether, in communication via email, almost wholly by accident and coincidence. Taking this to be a sign, perhaps the hand of destiny, a deal was secured to release something. More instinct than reaction, no one knew what to expect. The "oppressive necro electronics" of the recordings heard so far gave little idea of what lay in store, of the new depths to be explored, the madness to be embraced.
"Initiations", the debut recording for Aurora Borealis, is a lengthy proposition. Clocking in at one hour, thirteen minutes, it represents a journey, a metaphysical odyssey of uncertain outcome. From the psycho-religious clamour of 'Will to the chapel' with its jihadic cries, through to the somnambulant, subterranean oscillations of 'Eight pentacles', the way ahead is far from clear, the atmosphere claustrophobic and threatening.
'The river of Los' showcases a new breadth of vision for Burial Hex with layers of undulating analogue synth and gentle percussion, an opiate addled take on the horror electronics hinted at previously, and perhaps an indication of things to come. This long track takes the listener on a river journey, part Apocalypse Now!, part Orpheus in the Underworld, submerged in Carpenter's dense Fog, slow moving discomfort and ague. The album ends with the half speed collisions, static miasma and white noise squawl of 'Bo -II- Ne', the listener deposited on shores unknown, prostrate at the feet of the infinite mystery.
Burial Hex has surpassed all expectation with "Initiations": Kneel, o ye acolytes, before an astral-industrial opus of vast depth and occult magnitude.
"See that door marked 'Exit'? No, of course you don't there's no escaping here." - Heathen Harvest.

DEAD RAVEN CHOIR
"My Firstborn Will Surely Be Blind" CD
Recorded in Poland on cheap and archaic Soviet Bloc technology,"My Firstborn Will Surely Be Blind" sees DEAD RAVEN CHOIR
in full throttle audio assault with total disregard for all conventions of audio fidelity, with great songs of the 20th
Century by artists diverse as Townes Van Zandt, Richard Thompson and Cole Porter torn limb from limb and dragged through
Smolken's forest home. Curiously upbeat in parts, though with harrowing and bizarre artwork.
"A ghostly fog. A hollow sonic death rattle: Doom with pneumonia" - THE WIRE
"A fusion of folk and country song templates and trebly, bass-deprived black metal sounds... Triumphant" - Boomkat

THE STarGAZER'S ASSISTANT
"The Other Side of the Island" CD
"We find no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end"
- James Hutton, Theory of the Earth, 1795
Deep underground, life moves slowly. Once teeming life, the great swamps of the
Carboniferous era were buried under the weight of 300
million years, eventually returning to the surface as coal. In
this new form they would be consumed in fires and furnaces
for three thousand years before blackening the lungs of
Empire and driving the Industrial Revolution. It was then
that James Hutton, the first geologist, began to consider the
depths beneath our feet and the unimaginable abyss of time
that they represent. This is the world of The Stargazer's
Assistant. This is the forge of the Earth. This is deep time.
'The Other Side Of The Island' is the soundtrack to the
sculptural works of David J Smith. In addition to his percussion
duties with Guapo, Smith has spent the last two years
bringing his visions to life; life that emerged slowly,
painstakingly, out of wax, coal, copper and lead. In much the
same way, the soundtrack itself slowly writhes organically
before the listener: the groan of the motherlode, the shifting
of tectonic plates, the song of the Earth's crust.
In collaboration with longstanding musical cohort Daniel
O'Sullivan (Guapo,Miasma & The
Carousel Of Dead Horses) and audio engineer Antti
Uusumaki (Mothlite), Smith has created a strange work comprising of
layered vocals, percussion, electronics and prepared strings.
The Stargazer's Assistant offer up the soundtrack of eternal, elemental labour.

Silvester Anfang
"Kosmies Slachtafval" CD
Silvester Anfang hail from Flanders, channeling an ancient spirit of blasphemous anarchy, transposing the nameless fiends of yore as free-flowing ritual psych occultic Flemish rock. Kosmies Slachtafval (trans. "kosmic slaughterhouse sweepings/debris") sees Silvester Anfang in dark, post-krautrock, heavy jam mode: guitars, bass, keys, flute and percussion combine with vocals to create a doomy funeral psych rich in the textures of ritual and worship.
Through a series of cassette tapes and CD-r's released in micro editions, the arcane Belgians have garnered a fearsome and mysterious reputation for dark intense musical outpouring and idolatry. We are very proud to foist their first ever full length compact disc release onto an unsuspecting public.

Jesu
sundown/sunrise EP
JESU creates yet another epic record, Justin Broadrick marrying his
trademark bass-heavy riffs with an almost Phil Spector-ish pop sensibility creating anthems of melancholic euphoria.
Half buried clean singing collides with speaker rattling low end, blissed out
humming resonance and machine beats to create an otherworldly ghost pop.
The Sundown/Sunrise EP picks up where 2006's Silver EP left off, this time
taking two songs and stretching them out over 35 minutes, mixing the
bittersweet melody with huge swathes of oceanic drone and minimilist
electronica - this is by far the most accomplished and ambitious that Jesu have sounded to date.

01. Sundown
02. Sunrise

L'Acephale
"Mord und totsclag" CD.
Epic & violent Black Metal with an extremely intellectual edge, from Portland, Oregon. Acephale; from the Latin a-cephalus, headless or without a chief.
Taking their moniker from George Bataille's political and cultural
journal from the late 1930's, Portland, Oregon's L'acephale have
created a ritualistic totem that stands as "a war machine against
received ideas".
Formed in 2002 and conceived originally as a one man project,
Set Sothis Nox La birthed a sonic Lusus Naturae of Herculean
proportion, taking equal inspiration from the current wave of
Eastern European black metal (including Drudkh & Hate Forest),
the more experimental approach of post-industrial neo-folk
(Waldteufel, Toroidh etc.) and cultural writings & philosophies
from neo-paganism through to the surrealism of the Inter-War
years.
Following on from other USBM ubermensch like Weakling,
Wormwood, Leviathan and Wolves In The Throne Room et al,
L'acephale create a heady brew - blasting whirlwinds of frenetic
energy combine with more measured and eerie passages to
create something potent, original and devastating.
"This is an amazing disc, taking inspiration from the Ukranian black metal of Hate Forest and Drudkh as well as the ultrablown powersaw violence of Akitsa, the apocalyptic folk of Waldteufel and Toroidh, and an alchemical blend of thought that
draws from a combination of early 20th century surrealism and paganism." - Crucial Blast

TENHORNEDBEAST/MARZURAAN
split CD
Aurora Borealis is proud to present this split CD by two of the lesser known greats from the Northeast of England. TENHORNEDBEAST is the dark vision of Christopher Walton, part of the much feted ENDVRA, masters of 90s dark and occult ambient.
'Law of the needle', clocking in at over 28 minutes, is an oppressive opus of doomed drone, both monolithic and multifaceted. Pure power. "elongated, sinister drone, ...distant, echoing string resonance from bowed guitars and cold, steely walls of distortion"
think the good folks at Boomkat, as well they may. Check out his other releases on Cold Spring.
MARZURAAN contribute 'Into countless battles', 13 minutes of narcotic guitar haze. Described by some as 'psychedelic/noise', MARZURAAN features Lee Stokoe of the excellent CULVER (also SKULLFLOWER, INSEMINOID and others...).
I think this is my favourite of anything they have done to date. So good, you never want it to end.
The gruff metal grunts of the 'Solid Wood' LP have been replaced by a subdued, almost crushed vocal, totally stands out. "acres of textured guitar, low end pressure and brooding drums" say Boomnkat.
Can't wait to hear more from MARZURAAN - this is epic, like a bassier, looser, Mogadon-dosed JESU with a man past caring roped in to give his thoughts on where its all gone wrong.
Pete from MARZURAAN created the artwork and layout. Double sided print on heavy textured card with two diecut runic symbols. Comes in a pvc bag. This is an absolute dark gem.

WOLFMANGLER
"Dwelling In A Dead Raven For The Glory Of Crucified Wolves" 2LP
FINALLY.... The vinyl version of the critically acclaimed WOLFMANGLER meisterwerk, presented here in an ultra deluxe double LP version.
Heavyweight gatefold in a poly bag with black and metallic silver cover sticker. New artwork graces the inside gatefold, a literal interpretation
of the album title: a grim forest filled with crucified wolves and dead ravens by art genius French (Blackest Rainbow, Heroin skateboards, etc).
The vinyl itself is presented as a double LP, with side D containing two previously unreleased tracks, 'King Guthrum' and 'Herbst'. Essentially its something of a blend of transparent green and solid brown and not necessarily recommended for military or sport
hunting usage. As if this were not enough, the set is completed with two posters printed on newsprint-style recycled paper. One features the cover artwork by Alexander Tucker,
the other depicting the gatefold artwork by French. Quite a package, attempting to do justice to the monumental sounds etched in the vinyl.
"Doom fans should start getting giddy now - Wolfmangler is the forest-dwelling pseudonym of a certain Smolken,
the Polish political migr probably best known for his work under the Dead Raven Choir moniker. Sometimes connected to the mysterious
Jewelled Antler Collective, Smolken spends his time flitting between peculiar full-moon avant-folk and God-bothering black metal evilness
to devastating effect. However, Wolfmangler sees both leanings combined - we have the sentiment of black metal embedded in a thick mire of
droning forest sound, which some describe as 'death folk'. The result is utterly captivating and sounds unlike anything else you have
probably ever heard, with distorted double-bass drones, pagan percussion and fairytale flutes bubbling beneath Smolken's strangled groans.
Imagine if Deaf Center were making black metal and had some help from Fonal records' folky beauty Islaja and you might be able to get an
inkling of what Wolfmangler are going for... but you'll probably have to be sacrificing a lamb at midnight on midsummer's eve to really
achieve the 'feeling'. This is demonical sound, and in its lack of the usual extremity you might expect from Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone
and other such Northern European evil folks it becomes even more frightening. This is the sound of your darkest nightmares, and as we
all know - darkness is more beautiful than most people give it credit. Don't be afraid, or you'll be missing one of the grimmest treats of
the year!" - BOOMKAT

WOLFMANGLER
'Dwelling in a Dead Raven for the Glory of Crucified Wolves' CD
Smolken of DEAD RAVEN CHOIR returns with 6 forest dirges. Perhaps even more lumbering and grim than the acclaimed split with MOSS?
'Dwelling in a Dead Raven for the Glory of Crucified Wolves' "follows the chamber doom quartet lineage of their previous
releases, the bass/bass/double bass here being augmented by what
sounds like a flute and maybe a French horn. And a big drum. The drum
and flute give songs...an almost Korean court music
feel, but the French horn pulls the soupy bass throb closer to Noggin
The Nog territory. There's also a kind of Ray Harryhausen feel,
something reminescent of the awakening of a plasticine dragon or the
approach of clunkily animated skeletons holding swords, maybe one
skelly has one of those spiky ball and chain thingies. If you could
sonically render the effect of heavy rags being hypnotically stirred
into a cauldron of molten pitch with a severed antler this is the
sound you would get. " - PLAN B magazine.

VILLAINS
"Drenched in the Poisons" CD
Epic filth and metallic depravity from New York City. Their debut full length, "Drenched In The Poisons" conjures up the danger and proud unholy spirit of early metal and acid
punk. A vomitous fornication unto the whiskey whores and foul souls passing out in the dark. These eight aural lashes
come at the listener criminally intoxicated and definitely not nice.
Dirty metallic onslaught highly recommended for fans of early Bathory, early Venom, Abigail, Barbatos... You get the idea. Hammer of the posers. Fucking great album.

KNIVES OV RESISTANCE
"Prisca Sapientia" CD
"An end-times opus, inspired by John Dee and Karlheinz
Stockhausen and their quests to find the hidden truths
of the universe, through schismatic means. Knives ov
Resistance entreat the choruses of Enochian angels -
to the human ear, this resembles Popol Vuh's scores
for Werner Herzog, or a more restrained Godspeed You Black Emperor"
Excellent CD debut from this collective. Found sound, samples, orchestration and guitars ebb and flow across three long tracks.
An aural journey of 35 minutes.
"This pan-European group of tape manipulators and guitar explorers have delivered something peculiarly beautiful to Aurora Borealis, an industrial folk album that harks back to the playful, pastoral era of Cosmic Couriers as well as the more recent Jewelled Antler Collective discography.
Opener 'Rosicrucian' swells with spiral-picked melodies and thin electronic tides, evoking the serene cosmic folk of Witthuser and Westrupp. Elsewhere, the synth pulses and samples of 'Sovnig' shimmer amid the heat-haze of interlocked guitar mantras, grazing and unhurried.
Knives Ov Resistance's gentle methods are more akin to long-lost troubadours such as Tom Rapp than Boards Of Canada; the mournful closing track 'Outremer' roars with operatic vocal cries and radio dispatches, the tendril-guitars diffused and murmuring. A precious and elegant debut." - Rocka-A-Rolla
