'Betimes black cloudmasses' CD

Genre: avant garde
Highly-anticipated second album from the trio of Vincent De Roguin (Shora), Stephen O'Malley (Sunn0))), KTL) and Daniel O'Sullivan (Guapo). Like their genre and audience-confounding debut 'Deep In Ocean Sunk the Lamp of Light', 'Betimes' is an atmospheric, constantly changing piece that encompasses a mind-boggling array of different performance and processing techniques. The deeply psychedelic and affecting results present a soundstage that is continually evolving, with new elements entering and leaving the fray every couple of seconds. Betimes includes significant contributions from free percussionists Nicolas Field and Alex Babel, who sprinkle the sound field with an almost FMP-style rush of splattering drum sound, raising the intensity of the music (without resorting to bashing). 'Betimes' also features effects and vocals from Ulver mastermind Kristoffer Rygg.
Cover design by Swiss designer Nicola Todeschini and Vincent De Roguin. CD is in a letterpress card folio, printed by Stumptown.
"Musically, Aethenor summon the most somnolent examples of Bernard Parmegiani, Organum, Nurse with Wound, Klaus Schulze, Igor Wakhevitch, Coil, Iancu Dumitrescu and Charlemagne Palestine. Acousmatic drones ebb and flow into crackling and bubbling sonic clusters. Lulling piano motifs and lamenting chants shimmer into distant lunar horizons while oscillators spin and drove serenely into unchartered audial regions. Sometimes as calm as a silvery sea, so that every gentle cat's-paw and lapping wave is deafening. Sometimes as tempestuous as a fuming lava beach, spitting and popping at the surface." - Daniel O'Sullivan

'Deep in Ocean Sunk the Lamp of Light' CD

Genre: avant garde
Debut by trio of Stephen OÕMalley (Sunn0))))), Daniel OÕSullivan (Guapo), and Vincent de Roguin (Shora). Taking its title from The Iliad, the music here is deep and cosmic, completely unlike anything you'd expect from such heavyweights. More in the tradition of 'Spiral Insana' and 'Cyborg' than anything, the tracks float along in a masterful collage of activity, where careful scene changes highlight O'Sullivan's classic but artfully placed Rhodes bombs, de Roguin's organ, and O'Malley's guitar. Extraordinary effort has gone into editing, mastering, and shaping these pieces Ð these are not tossed off improvisations or "side-project" orphans. Housed in CD jackets hand-printed by Alan Sherry/SIWA

ALABASTER SUNS
"Alabaster Suns" CD (RPG-03)

Genre: Hardcore
ALABASTER SUNS is the new band rising from the ashes of the much celebrated CAPRICORNS (Rise Above records). The band features K A Williams on guitar and vocals and Nathan Perrier on drums with new blood DL on bass. After playing numerous shows, this is the bands first recording, with John Hannon at the controls (NO RECORDING studio).

The album opens at a furious pace with 'Iron Gang', brutal and heavy, it bears comparison with elements of VOIVOD, PRONG and similarly progressive brutal acts of the mid 80s, though with a Dischord edge, perhaps bringing to mind bands such as SWIZ and CIRCUS LUPUS. The band's complex time signatures, and atypical riffs create a true sound all their own though, as they seamlessly blend staggeringly heavy freight-train bludgeon with more mellow breakdowns. Indeed penultimate track 'Alabaster Suns' is a remarkably gentle piece, which makes very effective use of a perfectly selected guitar tone: being veterans of the hardcore scene, ALABASTER SUNS are perfectly clear about what they want to achieve and they know their equipment. 'The World Got Lighter' closes the proceedings with nearly eight minutes mixing mid-paced groove and ferocious rocking.

With their past pedigree and the sheer quality on offer with this debut album its certain that ALABASTER SUNS will get the attention they deserve.

aluk todolo
'Finsternis' CD

Genre: occult Kraut rock/BM
"Aluk Todolo are a recondite creature. Part okkult black metal fiend and part snide kraut menace. Somehow the doppelganger works and Finsternis proves for a second time there is brilliance in the absence of light. Dry, spare percussion grievously mines the scrapes, shrieks and shimmer of mutated guitar and bass. Finsternis is the German word for eclipse, mimetic of cyclic elements, phases and unphases, endless rebeginnings, broken circles and perfect circles. A dangerous, noxious coil of all things black." - Utech

Great follow up to their fisrt album, much stranger in that they pitch headlong into roads untrodden. In some ways its much mellower than the previous album and maybe more similar to the debut 7". Allegedly recorded in cave far from the modern world and then comprehensivley mixed later, this is a great piece of work.

"Another winner from Utech, but you knew this would be good. This time the wild blackened-psych is totally under control and driven by a deathmarch-drumbeat that is so solid that it really does put you in a trance. A bit of a departure and I'm down." - Hammer Smashed Jazz

ANAON
'An harar hag ar stered' 3" Cdr

Genre:regional experimental
Early recordings by SorcÕhenn, Ronan Le Deroff and Pierre Durand. The ancestral trio tells and lives its country, Brittany. With myths and legends from the mists of time, Anaon pulls us to our celtic roots; Recorded at Black Legions studio in age-old times by Wladd & Vorlock Drakkstein (Vlad Tepes).
The Black Legions connection makes a lot of sense, there are definite elements of Moevot here, and in the context of Black Legions it is interesting to re-evaluate Sorc'henn. Elements such as the use of language and the strange musical persepctive all benefit from this informed standpoint. When considering music like this, (I'm thinking here of the remarkable SADASTOR release also), its hard not to think that France's isolationism has been responsible for a great many incredible and intriguing bands who seem to be following their own paths.

ISAK ANDERSSEN
' The Kromatican/Evig' 3" cdr

Genre: modern classical/electronica
Isak Anderssen is a composer, musician and producer. Previously he has been releasing records under the alias of Upper Rooms, with two album-releases and more on the Norwegian label Beatservice. Isak Anderssen deals with a wide variety of styles and expressions. But whatever the setting might be, he deals with the simple and immediate and the hidden complexity that lies within the material he's working with. In addition to a variety of electronica-projects, he's been working with ballet music, chamber music, music for theatre productions and sound-sculptures, and he is also a member of the multimedia-duo BŒndvidda (with Jon Halvor Bj¿rnseth). This beautiful release conjures sunlight glinting on ice fields, the freezing of breath on the Nordic air...

ASHES
"Yggdrasil" CD

Third and final album from this British UGBM legend. This time with some folky elements and some clean vocals, inspired on sylvian aesthetics and Nordic mythology, but otherwise it is as with the previous album: raw and cavernous and extremely distorted Black Metal, purely and strictly underground in sound, conception, and character.
Track list: Yggdrasil/Fenrir Unbound/A Darker Horizon/Ecilpse/The Last Embers/Snow/Sorrow Monumental/Until all is Dead/Ashes

Quite metal rather than BM, total BATHORY worship.

CD in jewel case. Supernal.

ATAVIST
"ATAVIST" CD

"Atavist is the sound of every conceivable negative emotion channelled through the medium of cranium- crushing doomed despair. Ungodly vocals are pitched against unholy foul sludge with bass levels tailored specifically for maximum bowel demolishing discomfort.
This is essential for fiends into: Corrupted, Khanate, Eyehategod, Grief etc.. Features Burning Witch wardrummer Jamie "Boggy" Sykes. Released in Europe via Invada records.
"Atavist are from sunny Manchester and their critically acclaimed debut album features 3 extended tracks of dark, grimacing, doom ridden metallic sludge. The first track on offer is cleverly titled Ô31:38Õ ; a half hour droning jam, harnessing all the finest elements of drone-rockÕs greats (The Melvins, Earth, Sunn o))), Boris etc) and injecting enough intelligence to put it next to even heavy post-rockers Pelican for scope and vision. In fact the album reminds me very much of OceanÕs debut record on Important not too long ago, large mutating compositions moving slowly (but surely) from place to place keeping the listening interesting but always deep, dark and heavy! A hugely satisfying listen, Atavist have the power, and they ainÕt afraid to use it!" - INVADA
PELICAN NECK / BOOMCAT
"This is intense, brutal and raw anti-music. Utterly fantastic and recommended to anyone with a taste for the truely extreme" METAL HAMMER 8/10

BAPTISM
'Grim Arts of Melancholy' CD

Genre:Finnish Black Metal
BAPTISM is known as one of the most reliable Finnish black metal acts with it«s instantly recognizable, yet deeply traditional, sort of puritanical "Eliterian" musical worship and esotericism. Referencing both older metal and a newly awakened purpose for a more extreme form of Luciferian art, BAPTISM«s work is always more than mere music - it«s a theistic black metal ceremony. As it is, "Grim Arts of Melancholy" stands as a natural continuation of the work BAPTISM initiated in the 90«s. Sargofagian«s articulated vocals unveil mysteries of a blackest nature in the foreground of a deeply darkened, almost insane, mostly mid-paced riffscape, which seems this time to have kept to a minimum the use of beautiful counterpointing of melodies. Old-school thrashing parts are captured amidst songs in their flight across godless depths, yet return to obscurity as soon as the listener is awakened from the morbid trance of a mid-paced minor key hammering. For most of the time the whole album sounds like one single extended ceremonial track dedicated to Azazel or some other force whose name is unknown to mankind. It achieves this atmosphere without using standard tricks such as extremely lo-fi production; in fact, this one probably has the clearest and most dynamic production BAPTISM ever had. It serves it«s purpose here to highlight the nature of the album as a sort of anti-symphony, a prayer, a clear vision of doom. The messages of BAPTISM«s "Grim Arts" are serious prophecies, not entertaining background music! 6 panel cover booklet including exclusive artwork and for the first time all lyrics printed also in CD version.

black elk
s/t CD

Genre: out-rock
The eponymous debut from Portland, Oregon's BLACK ELK is a raging destructo rock eruption, heavy, catchy, and flattening. This ten song album contains a creeped out conglom of carnivorous charred hardcore punk, the sludgy power of primo Pacific Northwest tarpit rawk (think KARP, MELVINS, and early SOUNDGARDEN as reference points), twitchy Midwestern noise rage somewhere between Am Rep Records (circa-1991) and a more rabid DIE KREUZEN, and a goatheaded psychedelic backwoods black mass/dance party risen to a freakin' fever pitch. Total crush. Produced by Mike Lastra at Smegma Studios (EARTH, THRONES, JACKIE O MOTHERFUCKER).
There's aslo some very heavy elements, very metallic, and its clear to see why these guys and RYE WOLVES have ended up on the same bill more than once.

BLACK ELK
'Always A Six, Never A Nine'CD

Genre: noise rock/alt metal
"Always A Six, Never A Nine" is the second album and the follow up to the 2006 self-titled debut from Portland, OR aggro wreckers Black Elk, whose psychotic brand of crushing, noise-rock influenced heaviosity is a return to the unhinged underground rock force of bands like Jesus Lizard, Melvins, Black Flag and Hammerhead. This new album features ten songs of seething weirdness, with the dissonant, crushing riffage, lunging rhythmic push and awesome freaked out, Yow-esque vocals of singer Tom Glose that made their debut a fave among anyone who remembered the days when Amphetamine Reptile ruled the underground rock scene, but with some interesting new elements (bleak, blackened guitar ambience, a smattering of piano, skyreaching guitar harmonies, etc.) that add new shadows to Black Elk's ferocious sound. "Always A Six, Never A Nine" is packaged in a heavy four-panel gatefold jacket with an eight page lyric booklet.

"itÕs like standing on the banks of a great fjord, watching solemn spectral processions of passing ancestral death ships, some elegant antiques with dragonÕs head at their prows, but mostly just the rotting hulks of forgotten wars, all trotted out to impress some mysterious underworld administration. BLACK SEAS OF INFINITY
'Hieros-Gamos'CD

Genre: ritual/dark ambient
Consisting of 4 compositions glorifying the marriage of gods and men. It is the dissemination of the secret art as bequeathed unto mankind by the fallen...In magnificent copulations the mysteries are revealed... All of the explorations on this release are accompanied by live ritual invocations. As many claim to perform "Ritual ambient: this is true ritual ambient in every sense of the word, as it is actual ritual and will transform the consciousness of the listener. Re-creating the ritual, unlocking the ophidian energies to manifest upon each listen... The fallen will arise...4 songs clocking in over 70 minutes....true ritualistic music! 4-panal digi-cd that comes with a 16 page booklet. Limited to 1,000 copies - Autumn Wind.

"immersing and entangling the listener in a dense, cloying web of shimmering, shifting drones, eerie vatic chants interspersed with clearly recited passages of Crowleyesque ritual invocation, and sudden, dramatic bursts of crashing cymbals, gongs and bells. The stygian, stifling ambience of Black Seas finds its closest analogue in the projects associated with the cult Finnish label Aural Hypnox, although there are also evident points of resemblance with other ritual ambient acts such as Psychonaut 75, Hati, Chaos As Shelter and Bestia Centauri. Black Seas make more extensive use of vocals than any of these other projects, but the overall atmosphere is similar." S Collins, judas Kiss

blood fountains
'Floods' CD

Genre: avant garde
"There is no beginning, there is no end, only perpetual oscillation between experience, memory and gravity. Emotion propels our lives, connected to one another and all things through infinity. Floods reaches inward, to the icy depths of the heart to touch and to return with ancient elements unfolding in spectral bliss and horror. Reality of pain and agony is equally married with yearning, dreaming and joyous exaltation. Stephen Kasner evokes a fully-realized painting-to-music translation, with collaborations by David Beaver, Mat Woods, Cheryl Pyle and the vexing vocals of Yoshiko Ohara (Bloody Panda). Floods calls forth a remarkable section of time and feeling, simultaneously compressed and unfurling. A frozen monster of memories, hope and love, and a constant reminder of death's door. Seamless, endless, connected energy. These are fragments of hauntings within us all. We must always remember." - Utech

Another great UTECH release: reminds me of a less bombastic, less medieval, less BM version of MENACE RUINE, wonderful.

Samples: Spiritless.

BLUEPRINT human being
s/t

"There's lots of post rocky drift, a sort of proggier Tarentel maybe, but then the horns kick in and we're in serious King Crimson territory. But there's also lots of fuzzy metal guitar wrapped around jagged loping Slintish rhythms, with strange sung / spoke vocals, all blending in some weird way that reminds us as much of Ved Buens Ende as Crimson. Some parts have the horns moving to the foreground, the music taking on a very jaunty garden party sort of feel, which makes us think of some damaged, sort-of-metal Penguin Cafe Orchestra or some bizarre Japanese what-the-fuck jazzdrone outfit or the stranger Circle side projects like Ratto Ja Lehtisalo. A bit schizophrenic for sure, but in a good way, a super dynamic sort of seasick meander through blasting metallic post rock, far out quirky prog, lilting almost RennFaire acoustic breaks, and blissed out repetitive krautrock. Be sure and stick around for the end of the final 11+ minute track, after a stretch of silence, comes a dizzying blast of freaked out psychedelic noise, all grinding loops, snippets of earlier songs, and all sorts of head spinning post production fuckery. Groovy laid back post-kraut-rock slathered in thick swirls of distortion and fuzzy effects, obscured by tape dropouts and strange damaged feedback, the whole thing warped and warbly as if broadcast through a thick cough syrup haze. So cool." AQ

CAINA
'Caina' MCD

Genre: avant garde UK Black Metal
MCD featuring 27 minutes of new material on digipak presentation, this is the heaviest souding and most oppressive Ca•na release since the early demos, not leaving behind its trademark ethereal and dreamy sound. In the artistÕs own words: ÒNo clean vocals, no plethora of fancy effectsÓ, this is the closest Ca•na ever got to sounding as a full band. This release also marks the end of an era, as the project is going on a hiatus, so this is the last youÕll hear from the band for a whileÉ

DEAD RAVEN CHOIR
'Cask Strength Black Metal' double CD

"Incredibly noisy, Black Metal / Noise covers of old Folk songs. This double CD edition collects their Black Metal works from 2001-2004: the 'Sheath and Knife', 'Grand Ravishing Extravaganza', 'Sevenfold Songs of Death', and 'Sturmfuckinglieder'. Utterly insane distortion and recklessly unreasonable cacophony touching the extremes of the genre."- Supernal
The cover of Leonard Cohen's 80's existentialist ditty "First We Take Manhattan" really is a work of genius and must be heard to be believed. Lots of fine work on here and with words from Georg Trakl, Rainer Maria Rilker and the marvelous Mr Townes Van Zandt.

DEADWOOD
'Ramblack' CD

Genre: noise/death ambient

'Ramblack' is the follow up to Deadwood's successful 2005 album "8 19" (CSR53CD). Over the past 3 years this Swedish artist has been toiling away, creating a new black ambient / death noise masterpiece and 'Ramblack' is the result. Cloaked in a more raw and morbid sound then its predecessor, this album truly changes ones perspective of audial darkness. This analogue beast of an album layers the tonal prayers of demons and the distorted cries of angels, sickness and depravity. True Death Electronics. The soundtrack to your end. 'Ramblack' features guest vocals from Norwegian Black Metal legend Maniac (Skitliv, ex-Mayhem), whose vocal approach on the song 'Forakt' shows the full range of his capacity. Truly one of the most sick and twisted pieces of sonic art ever recorded. Enjoy the disease!

'pacta daemoniarum / crasse' 2CD

Genre: avant garde Black Metal
Having already left a strong mark with their two revolutionary double albums on End All Life productions, which carry the rare honor of warranting the term avant-garde without regard of following any blueprints, here are the first two demos by this obscure and controversial French outlaw black metal band known for their decadent activities. 'Pacta daemoniarum' was originally released in 1999 and 'Crasse' released in 2001 and exhibited twisted, vociferus manic vocals spit on top of complex orchestrated highly distorted chaotic metal. Never resting and fully absorbed in the savage, sexually violent, drug-laden nihilism of French subculture.

'Mandala' CDr

Genre:crushing doom ambience

Five tracks of drifting drone, guitar ambience, leading to darkly beautiful meander and crushing heaviness. The heavy is that of EARTH '2': a warm and druggy fug with a touch of menace, something's not right at the periphery of your vision... Track one has a great keyboard that reminds me of the film CARNIVAL OF SOULS. There are surprises throughout, with some very gentle guitar work and birdsong on track two, evoking stuff like VOICE OF THE SEVEN WOODS, even JACK ROSE. There's also elements of ritual sound, temple ambiance, and a feel of MRTYU!, THUJA and so on. Hell's teeth, there's even a harmonica! Can it be true!? This is an excellent CD, really very impressive. "True sheffield black psychedelia".

Genre: grind/hardcore/doom
"Venomous doom grind horror from Portland, Oregon.

The raw, blackened energy and sonic power of this band really do suggest something very special is lurking here. It kind of gives us the feral excitement that cutting edge extremists like Burning Witch and Nasum have given us in the past. Slow, fast, colossally heavy and effortlessly executed basement crust metal punk. Five vital tracks to rip faces. You will be hearing much more from these guys. Watch out for a future Elitist / Transient split album coming out on Paradigms too." - Paradigms

EMIT
'Abortions'CD

Genre: black noise/dark ambient
"ABORTIONS" is the second cd release by EMIT, constructed by EMIT's doppelganger Unknown Ikon. "ABORTIONS" consists of 16 tracks which make up over 63 minutes of dark ambient experiments...past compositions and newer passages of black ambience... harbingers of what will become of the presence they feel called EMIT.... This cd will lead you down the dark tunnels of abandoned temples filled with past rituals...dust covered hallways littered with the bones of fear. These are the lost relics and newly created moans of EMIT. The wind is warm on my skin....like the breath of a beast I cannot see... Comes with a gloss covered 8-page booklet, limited to 1,000 copies. - Autumn Wind.

"This later material from Emit showcases the extremes of the band's sound, from the bizarre percussion/chant rituals soaked in endless folds of diseased blackness, to blasts of hyperdistorted black metal that's buried underneath so much noise and weird samples that it turns into an oily, filthy ambience. Most of the recordings that are included here are from the solo incarnation of Emit, the sole product of the mysterious Unknown Ikon who plays all of the instruments and supplies the field recordings, ambient drones and fucked up industrial sounds that are splattered across the album. Some weird shit here..."Behind These Eyes" combines a stumbling motorik-like drumbeat with modulated feedback, and "Decay And Arise" sounds like a ritualistic drum circle jamming along with a wobbly bassline in the middle of a huge cathedral. "The Return" sees groaning, anguished moans and pulsing percussion swirled with horror movie pipe organs, kind of like Abruptum gone krautrock. The more abstract, ambient tracks focus on weird, echoing voice recordings, drifting slabs of Lustmordian drone, haunting organ melodies, eerie harmonica-like strains, and spluttery percussion. A few tracks travel into deformed black metal territory, like "The Herald Precedes The Prince" which combines warbling, ultradistorted black metal "riffs" with distorted pipe organs and sloppy, stumbling drumming..." -Crucial Blast

If STRIBORG is too pedestrian for your tastes, look no further. It is highly likely that if friends and family catch you listening to this they will be very worried about you.

Genre:drone/ambient

"Richard Dawson's project that debuted on Blackest Rainbow earlier this year, which was followed by CDRs on Bells Hill, Low Point and Dead Pilot, and another release on Blackest Rainbow, a split cassette with fellow UK droner Gareth Hardwick. The Invisible Castle is far more intense, and in some ways heavier than the previous releases on BR, but retains Dawson's own dark take on the world of psychedelic drone music, and this is a proper drone release, clocking in an hour for the full piece. Intense and superb! Limited to 1000 copies in pro-printed wallets." - Blackest Rainbow.

Fen
"Ancient Sorrow" CD

Genre: Sorrowful UK black metal

"Inspired by the bleak, esoteric landscapes of Eastern England. Fen blend aspects of Black Metal, Progressive Rock, Folk and Ambient, the three musicians sought to express loss, sorrow, exaltation and a sense of ancient pride through the music Ð thus Fen was born. The ÔAncient SorrowÕ EP could be described as dark, atmospheric Black Metal with some Post Rock and Doom influences and would be most appealing to fans of early Agalloch and Primordial as well as Alcest and Amesoeurs."
Excellent UK black metal, totally recommended: its very etherial and melancholy, with the epic feel of say DRUDKH or WALKNUT. There is a definite ALCEST feel, though its much more ballsy. Recommended.

Genre: noise/doom/sludge
Every release from the Ohio group just keeps cranking the frustrated, ultra-pissed-off negativism, mutant crossover thrash riffs, gooey doom tempos, feedback, narcotics, trailer park satanism and absolutely skull-splintering slow-motion mosh riffs even further. If you've never heard 'em, imagine an unholy union between Japanese doomlords Corrupted and the scathing thrash of The Accused colliding together into a mutant form of sludgy, thuggish doomthrash and left to stew in an oily vat of Gummo-esque atmosphere.
But this, this is something different. Different at least from any of the other Fistula records. At some point last year, the members of Fistula met up with another Ohioan, Steve Makita from the midwest power-violence legends Apartment 213, midwest power-tool noise legends Lockweld, and current second throat for Agoraphobic Nosebleed. At some point, both of these parties decided that joining forces would be a good move and had Makita lug over his toolbox to the Fistula practice space and drag out some of his most lethal circuit-shredders, keyboards and power tools. The end result are two new discs, Lessons In Lamentation and Inverted Black Star, each one possessed by a single hour-plus track of Fistula with Steve Makita conjuring fucking HUGUNGOUS slabs of apocalyptic free-metal. And it's Fistula's most abstract, demonic music ever, a charred mess of harsh electronic skree and gut-rumbling noise and unholy doom metal.
The title itself points to the pure blackness of Inverted Black Star: a massive hour-plus wave of bleak, blackened improvised doom riffing, only one or two riffs tops, but each one repeated over and over into infinity as the band and Makita pile on layers and layers of corrosive feedback, pneumatic drill noises, slicing sinewave tones, long black tentacles of undulating drone. About halfway through the disc, a voice begins speaking underneath the crushing sludge and noise, and it creates an effect similiar to hearing a television news bradcast about something really bad from four rooms away, only to sink back into the lumbering, monotonous deathtrance. Utterly crushing. There has been a groundswell of bands and artists lately that have been fusing the heaviness of the slowest, most extreme doom metal and black metal with pure harsh noise, artists like Wilt, Josh Lay, Matt Bower's Mirag stuff, for instance. Well, you can add these two discs from Fistula to the top of the heap of blackened doom noise. These are as crushing, noise-encrusted, and corrosive as anything else lurking in this new realm of abstracted heaviness.
Inverted Black Star is packaed in a signature Crucial Bliss three-panel sleeve, all black and green with artwork from Ralf Burkart, the disc itself attached to the sleeve on a plastic nub. Release in an edition of 300 copies.

fistula
'lessons in lamentation' CDr

Genre: noise/doom/sludge
In contrast to it's companion disc 'Inverted Black Star' (see above), 'Lessons In Lamentation' sounds like it's virtually "rocking". Where Inverted spews monoto-riffs and malevolent power tool noise across the jet-black waste of it's hour long length, this jam is more upbeat, opening with a massive chugging sludgy metal riff that cycles over and over, slowly joined by a swarm of sizzling feedback and high pitched sine-whine. Crazed shredding solos appear, the central riff changes shape throughout, the whole track seems to be split into three distinct sections. It's super hypnotic as Fistula grinds away endlessly surrounded by Makita's dense and textured noise. Deep monstrous vocals emerge from out of the filth, gutteral invocations that are impossible to decipher. A massive plodding industrial dirge, a meditation on repetitive metal riffing and the blackest feedback, recorded all the way in the red, a majestic crumbling obelisk of monstrous noise-doom.
There has been a groundswell of bands and artists lately that have been fusing the heaviness of the slowest, most extreme doom metal and black metal with pure harsh noise, artists like Wilt, Josh Lay, Matt Bower's Mirag stuff, for instance. fleshpress
'Pillars' CD

Genre: sludge/drone
'Pillars' is a monuMENTAL album. Listening to it feels like you've dropped from on top of the pillars sky high down into nothingness. Mind-fucking freefall which eventually ends all of a sudden, dazing the consciousness, cracking the skull. The newest (2007) album from the Finnish disciples of nothingness refuses to be categorized easily. The usual Fleshpress elements - grieving sludge, coal-dark ambience etc. - are present but now they are accompanied with fast, blasting black metal outbursts. A release of its own kind and easily their best so far. 78 minutes of blackened, nihilistic sludge.

fleshpress
'Worm Dirges' CD

Genre: sludge/drone
Unlike Fleshpress' newer one, "III", described as clean and spacious and open (not words you'd expect to find in a review of a sludgy doom record) "Wšrm Dirges" is much less polished, much more primitive and primal, and not nearly as slow, but still plenty sludgy and heavy. Plenty of Eyehategod-isms for sure, but these two extended mostly instrumental jams don't sound metal as much as they sound sort of krautrocky, or post rocky or even post punky in a weird way. Very reminiscent of Dutch hypno metallers Gore, a simple riff repeated over and over and over and over. Completely and utterly hypnotic. Both tracks devolve into dreamy drones here and there before lurching back into sludge mode, but the interesting thing is that the main riffs in each track (two tracks, two riffs!) don't sound metal so much as they sort of sound like Black Flag. Seriously. Maybe Black Flag at 16rpm. You can -almost- imagine them sped up with Rollins ranting over the top. But c'mon, Black Flag at 16rpm?!?! If that doesn't sound like the best fucking thing ever to you, there's something seriously wrong. Obviously this is essential for the drone doom dirge faithful, Sunn O))), Earth, Boris, Corrupted, etc. as well as fans of the new post rock/metal hybrids (Isis, Conifer, Tides, Baroness, Buried At Sea, Pelican) But other folks into stuff like Circle or Salvatore or the more extreme end of the post rock spectrum might really dig this too. Packaged in a cool tri-fold printed cardstock sleeve.

Runhild Gammelsaeter
'Amplicon' CD

Genre: experimental

Runhild Gammelsaeter (Thorr's Hammer, Sunn0))), Khlyst) releases her first solo recording. The purpose was to create something organic Ð sound with and about life. A lonely thing, like life, arisen from void. Stillness and a microphone, vocal chords. An idea, thoughts, a goal. Sounds of cycles of life and death, birth and cessation, described with terminology from physics, chemistry and biology. Creating by amplifying an infinitely small idea Ð creating an Amplimer, an Amplicon. Amplicons are pieces of DNA formed as the products of natural or artificial amplification events. Like evolution, giving rise to animal forms with ability to reproduce and die. Amplifying from a minute non-tangible idea something larger which may be experienced with the auditory sense. In physics, matter creation is the appearance of elementary particles in physical processes; the opposite of annihilation. Amplicon sees Gammelsaeter as a creation operator, increasing the number of particles in a given state, taking the operation necessary to amplify ideas to sound. Mixed by Tore Ylvisaker of Ulver.

GEISHA
'Die Verbrechen Der Liebe'CD

Genre: noise rock/alt metal
"This hour-long, six track monolith follows Geisha into a psychedelic black storm, their blown-out and raw rock infused with a bone-rattling recording and covered in a thick sheen of white noise and gritty distortion. As with their previous album, the spirit of seminal noise rock / sludge rock (think Cherubs, Melvins, My Bloody Valentine's Isn't Anything for coordinates) is combined with violent, chaotic NOISE and tainted with blurred VHS cassette visions and vague allusions to BDSM, and then jammed through an orgone accumulator, forming a ferocious, crushing rock beast that reveals it's powerful hooks and melodies underneath the churning distorted bass rumble and sludgemetal riffage , blasts of psychedelic drone-noise and corrosive skree, percussive pummel, and deranged singing. The sound is immense, and the first five tracks on Die Verbrechen Der Liebe deliver Geisha's in-the-red heaviness and hooks in surplus. "Prelude To Amber Pays The Rent", "A Wilderness, Except By Sight", "Sportsfister" - every one is a crusher. But then Geisha pull out the monstrous thirty-minute, thirty-five second closer "Theme From Diana", and the tone changes completely. This track is a re-working of a "metal percussion" set that Geisha originally performed live several years ago, and it begins as a slowly building fog of voices and effects and shimmering metal that blooms into an expanse of droning, fx-heavy guitar, looping samples, cosmic effects, and improvised percussion. It's a kind of rumbling industrial dronescape that stretches out forever, until suddenly in the last few minutes the drifting drones and psychedelic guitars and sampled voices suddenly explode in an immolating nuclear blast of overdriven, speaker-annhilating noise and the track immediately, terrifyingly changes shape into a monstrous lumbering noise-metal dirge that bulldozes out of your speakers, whooshing Hawkwind effects swooping overhead, the band knotted together into a white-hot blast of ultra heavy riffage, distortion, and a wall of percussive force. "Diana" is one of the most crushing pieces of music that I have ever heard from Geisha, like some majestic and brutal conglom of Swans, Skullflower, Merzbow, and Burmese forged into a destructive space-metal supernova. Crucial Blast is releasing the CD version of Die Verbrechen Der Liebe in a limited edition of 1,000 copies, packaged in a full-color gatefold jacket." - Crucial Blast
Bizarre how criminally underated this band is here in the UK. Go figure.

GNAW
'This face' CD

Genre: avant doom/noise
GNAW was formed in 2006 by Alan Dubin (ex-Khanate, OLD) along with Jamie Sykes (ex-Burning Witch, Thorr's Hammer, Atavist), Carter Thornton (Enos Slaughter), Jun Mizumachi (ex-Ike Yard: 80's NYC industrial legends) and Brian Beatrice (Emmy Award winning sound design/mix wizard). Dubin thought it would be fantastic to collaborate with some of his respected musician/friends, all who have diverse music backgrounds to see/hear what would develop. GNAW's debut album 'This Face' is the sonic culmination of over a year of sound experimentation. It's a genre destroying journey that almost defies description. Sykes is a percussive madman blasting out anything from tribal beats to ultra slow tom killings. Mizumachi is a renown sound designer for film & TV and is a master of electronics including synth, factory noise, metal bashing and other craziness. Beatrice is also a sound designer and mixer for film & TV and was the mixer for "This Face" as well as experimenting and adding additional sounds. Thornton is a crafty musician who actually makes his own instruments. He played guitar, bass, piano and some unnamed home-made "things". Additionally, Thornton supplied field recordings and arranged many of the songs. Dubin rounds out the group with his gut-wrenching vocals, noise and arrangements. Screaming, singing, whispers and chants can be heard throughout "This Face". Dubin's lyrics are vivid portrayals of all things bad.

The goslings
'Spaceheater/Perfect Interior' CD

Genre: noise/out-rock
Spaceheater/Perfect Interior collects the first two EP's from husband-and-wife duo the GOSLINGS, originally released as short-run CD-Rs on low-fi/indie noise imprint Asaurus Records in 2003-2004. Working with a signature palette of melted,low-fi indie pop and muggy/smeared psych-drone ambience ground through overdriven amplifiers and shot out into pools of swirling basement shudder, The GOSLINGS adorn their gorgeous powermurk with eerie field recordings, ghostly subterranean vocals, and crackling cable buzz.If SUNN O))) had, in actuality, been a psych-addled late-80's dreampop outfit on 4AD Records, or if cult shoegazers MEDICINE had ever collaborated with drone-axe sorcerers EARTH, the resulting fug may have been similiar to this avalanche of mystic black sugar. Simultaneously ethereal and blown-out,angelic strains of four-track mud-majesty shaking the walls of the ancient well it's buried beneath. Hypnotic and excellent as always.

GREAT AMERICAN DESERT/DREAR
'Solipsis/Warring against the sun' split CD

"Desolate, Luciferian, God-Crushing Blackened Doom Metal. Born in the Osage Plains at the foot of the Eastern Hills; transplanted into the grey, rain-drenched landscape of the Northwest...Great American Desert is the essence of desolation, the sonic representation of Lucifer on Earth, and the emanation of the Demonic philosophy of its mastermind. A vehicle for hatred, disgust and majestic mindscape. On "Warring Against the Sun", Drear play raw blackened Doom, snatching glimpses at the futility of Man and the failure of the universe." - AWP
"Another fantastic release from Autumn Wind Productions! These two bands play some absolutely crushing doom, while still holding true to their sinister blackened roots. Drear is a two-man blackened Doom metal project from the United Kingdom. J. of Great American Desert/Vrolok appears as a guest vocalist, which is how I'm assuming these two paired up to begin with for this split. I think Great American Desert wins the award for coolest band picture ever. If you would like to see it, just do a google for the band name. It will come up, I assure you. Great American Desert is a one-man Hypnotic/Ritual Doom Metal band out of Oklahoma of all places. The man behind the music: Jeremy Christner. Many of you may know him as being an accomplished Occult author. His literature deals largely with Luciferianism. He has written such literature as " The Silhouettes of Twilight" and his more recent well-known work, "Kosmology." He also seems to have a strange obsession with roosters. I'm not sure why, but I'm assuming if you read his book, you will find out." - Heathen Harvest

gruenewald
s/t CD

Genre: ethereal post-BM
Beautiful, introspective songwriting from Germany's Gruenewald. Slow, melancholic and powerful compositions that bring to mind the mellow, mid-period of Anathema, Ulver and the nocturnal resonance of maybe Bohren And Der Club Of Gore building with a hazy glow of Jesu. "Gruenewald" is three deep and involving tracks spanning 45 minutes, each based around the power of the earth and the forces of nature. Clean guitars, deep bass, low-end tones and drifting percussion are brought together by bold Teutonic vocals, all building to soaring atmospheric peaks.
Presented in a stunning limited edition digipak format of 1000 copies. An intimate album, full of wonder, with it's original roots in the world of atmospheric, experimental metal music but with it's eyes firming fixed on the stars.
This is an excllent album and a real grower: after a couple of listens its hard to imagine listening to anything else. Highly recommended -RESTOCK -

Genre: doom noise
"Unbelievably heavy and slow amplifier overload from France! Two long tracks of uber-doom which is seemingly devoid of any coherant structure and exists only to open up a black void in your stereo speakers through which to suck out your very soul. Habsyll sound to me like a less happy-go-lucky Khanate (??!!- AB), or Monarch without the hipster irony. Totally morbid!

HALLVARDUR ASGEIRSSON
"Lifsblomid" CD

Eight pieces written by Icelandic composer Hallvardur Asgeirson and performed at the Academy Of Arts in Reykjavik. Challenging yet beautiful, powerful and evocative avant modern classical composition taking elements of the 20th Century Viennese musical school of Schonberg, Berg and Webern, the urban deconstructionalism of Einsturzende Neubauten and the desolate arctic glow of Sigur Ros, Biosphere or the Kranky Records roster. Droning doomed classical, shadowy atmospherics and carefully layered works complemented by choral Teutonics for female voice. A mighty proposition indeed. Another excellent release from Paradigms, mining rich and untapped seams as always.

'Asmodai' CD

The forsaken mother has birthed a godhead. A triune declaration of intent rich in the beliefs of the Tabula Smaragdina and Solomonic Magic. Asmodai/Sammael reigns as the king of impurity spreading his blackened sovereignty like so much tar upon the heart of man. And as all things were by the contemplation of one; so all things arose from this one thing by adaptation.

HORSEBACK
'The Invisible Mountain' CD

Genre: avant garde/dark Americana
"As Jodorowsky's Holy Mountain was a satire of the western approach to self-actualization, Horseback's The Invisible Mountain is a work composed as a means to channel the self-destructive tendencies of its maker, Jenks Miller. The channeling process has required a functionally solipsistic worldview based on the efficacy of individual will in ascertaining its specific reality. This worldview, in turn, has caused a sort of fissure between social consciousness and individual consciousness. In specific, the invisible mountain is an abstraction of the God-self in this whole process, a tenuous and ever-collapsing fabrication that perpetuates the individual psyche amidst processes that would otherwise destroy it or steal its creative power. The mountain itself is false: existing only to the individual as he climbs toward self-realization, and unknowable in any external reality; but it is as necessary as it is false. Without the fabrication, individual reality would crumble and one would be stripped of creative power.
The record itself is based on repetitive guitar riffs and drum patterns similar to mantras in meditation, blackened vocals referencing the uncomfortable tension between one's quest for transcendence and their unresolved relationship with the rest of society The tracks are devices to help maintain discipline in an attempt to conquer. The last track breaks from the mantras into a less rigorously controlled wash of sound. Liberation.
Pressed with black ink on a black translucent paper sleeve. All white inserts with poster. Illustration by Denis Kostromitin." - Utech

This is excellent, UTECH are on fire right now. With a 'Hex'era EARTH feel of bleak Americana almost, but with a thoroughly unpleasant vocal filled with menace, this has been on heavy rotation here at AB towers. Its almost as though it shouldn't work, but it really does , in beautiful morbid spades.

Samples: Tyrant Symmetry.

THE HOWLING WIND
'Pestilence & Peril' CD

"In what will go down as a monument within the U.S. black metal scene, 'Pestilence & Peril' sees Killusion take his black metal pedigree to a new level of polarization; one in which his true vision of what such music should entail can manifest without compromise. Through Killusion's vicious and doom-tinged riffs, his spew of venom via his through provoking and intimidating lyrics, along with drummer Parasitus' stealthy maneuvering of the kit, 'Pestilence & Peril' is another sonic offering which reflects America's inevitable continuous spiritual decay and downfall. The result, 'Pestilence & Peril' coming across as one of the most prominent U.S. black metal albums to be released this year. Resistance is futileÉ hail Babylon!"

KANIBA
'The Serpent, the Omega and Completion of the First Circle'CD

Genre: ritual/dark ambient
Thematically, The Serpent is of the Earth and Shub-Niggurath; the Womb of all, the grave of all. Life and Death, creation and destruction, the Alpha and the Omega. The Serpent represents the return to the Source from whence Kaniba came, as Terrorgoat, and a reflection upon the journey from that moment to what is now. It is a union of old and new elements, of old and new themes. The Serpent represents good and evil, light and dark; the giver and taker of life. The Serpent celebrates Life as the gift which comes from the womb of Shub-Niggurath, and The Serpent celebrates Death as the sacrifice craved by the jaws of Shub-Niggurath. The Serpent is the grave, which is a womb, The Serpent is the birth occuring through demise. The Serpent is the undoing of death, and the elevation of the soul that is ascendancy.

Most of all, The Serpent is the end. - Autumn Wind.

"THE SERPENTÉcontains two long tracks, each well over half an hour, with the voodoo-cult inspired titles of ÔDamballah WedoÕ and ÔAyida WedoÕ. Heavy electronic drones mix with subsonic rumbles, metal percussion, and heavily distorted vocal interjections. The overall effect is ritualistic, claustrophobic and very sinister. Kaniba are operating within the same stygian netherworld of ritual dark ambient as C.O.T.A., Sacrificial Totem, Chaos As Shelter...Kaniba would fit right in with the Aural Hypnox roster. The drone elements of KanibaÕs sound mean that fans of Moljebka Pvlse and TenHornedBeast might want to check this release out as well. THE SERPENTÉ is a perfect soundtrack to a shamanic journey through the bowels of he earth on the back of the Midgard Serpent. Ride the snake, babyÉ" - S Collins, Judas Kiss.

Keplers Odd are a unique drone project comprised of bass, guitar and noise. The band's debut album GRO J1655-40 is a raw sound affair performed and recorded live in the truest sense of the idea. Keplers Odd create textural soundscapes of harsh atmospheric noise which show an uncanny Merzbow-ian sense of tension and release. KINIT HER
'Glyms or Beame of Radicall Truthes' CD

Genre: far out/experimental

"Kinit Her are triumvirate a realm of qliphotic vibrations. For their debut album three Wisconsinites holed up in basements and bedrooms to create an opus of eastern-European folk melodies and black metal washes embroidered with witches croons and crystalline sonic manipulation. Kinit Her turned to their nightside for GlymsÕ on songs like ÒThe Arc of AcuityÓ and ÒCrypt Cathedral ShrineÓ mischievous string arrangements are brought to the fore, while tracks like ÒQuadrigaÓ and ÒFalling AerolithsÓ are massive guitar driven triumphs.
'Glyms or Beame of Radicall Truthes' pulls its magico-philosophical inspiration from a wide array of sources from the Purple Analects of Taoism, to the Western esoteric tradition, up to modern day conspiracy theories. Musically, the record is informed by the 80Õs british underground experimental scene, 90Õs Scandinavian black metal, and the timelessness of all folk currents."

KLANGMUTATIONEN
"Schwarzhagel" CD

"Klangmutationen are a mystery. More could be said about what their music isn't than what it is. Hailing from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the underground experimentalists pierce the veils of Eastern and Western music. Recalling early sets on FMP as well as the Takayanagi/Abe axis of Japanese free music, Schwarzhagel is the sound of a spirit falling past its own life after death, forever." - Utech
Wow. This is a pretty unique disc. It begins with some experimental guitar playing, lots of bends. Then it veers towards some loose drone with assorted guitar work, but the whole thing gets way more interesting when the free sax joins in. Far out and wholly unusual. "II" sample. LOCRIAN
'Drenched Lands' CD

Genre: avant drone
"First full-length studio album from one of the most consistently good bands around today, Chicago's Locrian. Drenched Lands is a beautifully thought-out piece of music, from a gentle guitar strum/synth opening (not a million miles away from Culver/Earth "Pentastar"-era territory) which cuts out abruptly just as you're becoming entirely engrossed, only to give way to an epic cavernous drone. The whole thing brings to mind some sort of disused industrial factory or barren post-apocalyptic landscape. Dark tones, noise, keys and the odd well-placed guitar strum combine brilliantly to evoke a feeling of desolation, loss, a submission of will....it's almost like the logical conclusion of Neil Young's 'Dead Man' soundtrack; almost tangiential in sound to Earth's recent(ish) "Hex" record. 1000 copies, co-release with Small Doses. Lugubrum
'Albino de Congo'CD

Genre: Boersk Blek Metle
Probably the best Belgian Black Metal album ever recorded in Congo, ÔAlbino de CongoÕ is LugubrumÕs latest descent into the heart of madness. Clearing yet another obscure track through the impenetrable overgrowth of the Ituri woods, the band is guided by ancient echoes of Boersk Blek Metle colliding with native timbres, galloping polyrhythms with slurring moods of nihilism and medication unable to control various tropical fevers... a journey through hostile territory, weirdly familiar... and utterly Lugubrumish!
One of the strangest, least commercial bands on this or indeed any other planet. £9.99

PHIL MAGGI
'Blue Fields in Paramount' CD

Genre:drone/ambient/home listening
"A member of Eve And The Sickness, Idiosyncrasia and Ultraphallus and Idiosyncratics label's boss along with Yannick Franck, Phil Maggi also released this new solo album on the aforementioned Idiosyncratics. The album contains a 39 minute track that is formed by totally different mini suites made with loops, fields recordings (he did his sessions in a church and in the streets of Zagreb) and sampled contemporary classical music. The track starts with a dark ambient drone mood with tonal inserts and follows with Zagreb sounds mixed with backward classical music. Suddenly anxious atmospheres take a hold thanks to synth sounds coupled with an orchestration of sampled/treated breaths. The track changes skins many different times, each one like a phoenix born from its ashes and Phil succeeds into keeping the listener's attention thanks to interesting sounds, light melodies and tension."
This is a really great piece of composition, beautifully constructed, layered and exectued. Nice packaging too from this interesting Belgian label. Limited to 300 only. Recommended.

Master musicians of Bukake
'Totem One' CD

Genre: ethnic psyche
Master Musicians Of BukkakeÕs newest record and part of a Northwest trilogy, marks an evolution from their first record 'Visible Sign Of the Invisible order' (Abduction records 2005). MMOB has now solidified into a 7 piece cosmic psyche force. Like a reverse dark side of the New Age sound, on the Totem series Master Musicians of Bukkake perform ritualistic electric excursions into the outer and inner reaches. Relying more on the electric power of psyched guitars, analog synth chants, and exotic heavy percussion. Totem one echoes with the delusions of a West Coast Death cult. Outer spaced Gamelan, dusty fuzz rock from celestial deserts, meditations of a deranged Krishna gathering, and the blurry acoustic guitar majesty of the Cascade mountains all reveal themselves here in epic form on Totem One. Every sound and note played put to tape by a group with a singular purging purpose. Totem one also features Vocals By MMOB honorary member Alan Bishop of the Sun City Girls.

"Master Musicians of Bukkake are the logical successors to the Sun City Girls' pantheistic, panglobal, sonic headfuckery" - The Stranger
Great piece of sonic tourism and pretty addictive, awesome use of repetition, especially the vocal parts. Digging this a lot.

MARZURAAN
"Five Years Of Fuck All" CD

"At last!!! We've had this one brewing for months now and it's well worth the wait! What started off as a small run of CDrs has become At War's most ambitious release to date, and I'm totally fucking chuffed by it!!! This collection comprises demos, live stuff, rarities and rehersals from the UK's most consistantly interesting, forward-thinking, and just plain fucking great band of the last decade. Starting off from now and moving backwards through time to the early bedroom demo days, this CD shows Marzuraan's evolution from simplistic droning minimalism of the two bass lineup to the full-on rock beast of today.
The album kicks off with a cover of Loop's "Afterglow", putting it through the post-Ginn blender and coming out with something great. The other cover here is a raging, lo-fi recording of Rollins Band's "Turned Inside Out", performed at the inaugral Glasgow Implodes fest a few years ago. There's a fierce, noise-ridden performance of "Nice Wang" that I think I recorded on Julian Cope's last tour (crowd (un)reaction the MZ was hilarious), the epic dark drone rock of GMT recorded at the Lord Clyde in Byker, and the aptly-named Kraut-esque monotone riff of "Earth 3" from the confusing Manbyrd cassette.
All in all, Marzuraan do it better than anyone else going right now; be it bleak minimal droning walls of sound, controlled experiments into feedback or baws-out "post" rock, without the scene points. They sound like the late, twisted Flag stuff on a mid-period Voivod album, with Swervedriver on in the background. Played by Helios Creed. Or maybe I just talked a load of bollocks, fuck knows! Buy this record, dickhead.
Totally great packaging by the guys at Thumbprint Press (HUGE thanks to WT for all the effort put into this, and Pete for artistic vision!); three-panel chipboard sleeve, double-sided print, with stark black letterpress and clear varnish. You may know these guys' work from the Sunn live album or one of the many Bastard Noise family releases, but this tops the lot in my opinion! Top banana." - AT WAR WITH FALSE NOISE

This is indeed a great package and great disc from a great band. Its thrice great!

MARZURAAN
'Solid State' CD

The first album proper from Newcastle's finest export. Droning and lumbering, 5 ultra heavy tracks are on offer here:
"hypnotic and loose but still has enough of a structure to latch onto and follow, not to mention there are some superb melodic moments that have a bit of a Godflesh undercurrent to them. For the most part expect bashing percussion alongside thick and massively sludgy detuned guitar/bass instrumentation (you can't really differentiate much between the two it's so dense). To change things up the drumming does let up at times in that the hits get softer and even sparser (needless to say the tempos here are damn slow), and the guitar/bass chords also slow down and break apart at times, leaving lots of breathing room. "Death Dirge Has Come" is a fitting title for track in which the distortion is so thick that the chords break down into fits of feedback as they sustain forth" - Aversion.

CD in a fancy fold out package designed by Stephen O'Malley.
