FUNGAL HEX
s/t picture disc double LP set
Just unearthed 40 copies of this. Once these are gone, thats it. This officially went out of print in 2006.
2 x 45rpm 12" picture disc in printed 2 colour vellum slip cover, limited to 500.
FUNGAL HEX was a collaborative installation by Brooklyn, New York artists: Aaron Cantor (sculpture), Fritz Welch (illustration), Stephen O'Malley (sound & print design) and Rylan Morrison (text). Originally presetented byThe Foundation and Center for Contemporary Arts Prague, the show was shown at Galerie Jelen, Prague between October 29th 2001 & December 5th 2001.
This double 45rpm picture disc edition aims to recreate some of the aesthetic of that exhibition.
Sonically, O'Malley (SUNN O))), KHANATE, GINNUNGAGAP) displays a more mellow, experimental side, with each track consisting of drones, ambient waves and subtle guitar work. Eerie scraping sounds drift in and out, and the general feel is unsettling. This work represents a very different side to the volume based, mammoth drones of SUNN O))).
An Installation Document With Audio Supplement (jewelcase CD) was pressed in an edition of 1000 to coincide with the exhibition, with James Plotkin (KHANATE, OLD) provided mastering assistance.
Aurora Borealis proudly present FUNGAL HEX as a double 45rpm picture disc edition, aiming to recreate some of the aesthetic of that exhibition. This superlative re-issue is limited to 500 pieces and comes packaged in a vellum sleeve featuring original artwork from the exhibition.

BEN NASH
'the seventh goodbye' CD
Ben Nash - All vocals, instruments, percussion, recording and production.
Listening to BEN NASH's debut full-length "The Seventh Goodbye", its hard to remember that this is indeed his first full album, here and now, in 2008. Nash's music has the assurance and character of a musician far beyond his 23 years, let alone the sheer multi-disciplinary skill, and yet its largely warm and welcoming, and with an entirely timeless character all its own.
Ben Nash first came to AB's attention having picked up a self-released cassette from the Sheffield based distro and label Blackest Rainbow (who have pressed a ltd vinyl version of this release). It was immediately apparent that this was something very special and we pretty quickly offered to work with Ben on a future release. After several more tapes and CDrs, both self-released and on various micro-labels, growing in scope and ambition with every release, and a series of strange geographical and linguistic synchronicities, Ben finally got in touch about a full-length release.
So here it is: "The Seventh Goodbye". Clocking in at 34 minutes, its not an overly long album, but rather one that demands repeated listenings, a collage of so many layers, patterns and textures so as to be as dazzling as the plummage of the finest peacock in paradise. Musical elements as diverse as folk, raga, Eastern percussion, drone, prog and noise collide and coalesce as the album unfolds, with each of the eight tracks providing new twists and turns, with never an element out of place.
The slow beginning of opener 'KUAD 9873' is a drone and vocal drenched movie score, chiming Western guitars building and dissolving in the sun before we move into the more unforgiving nocturnal territory of 'Night Call'; wind instruments trade cries with guitar scree, whispers and piano. Title track 'The Seventh Goodbye' is largely guitar based, with multiple tracks, rolling percussion, layered vocals and saxophone. That this should all be the work of one man is quite astounding, and its clear that comparisons with BEN CHASNY and VOICE OF THE SEVEN WOODS are more than mere flattery. 'Resolution' plays counter point to the drama of the previous track, a relatively short piece of solo guitar, psychologically much lighter.
'Smoke and Flattery' is largely percussive, with a variety of singing bowls, shakers, gongs and cymbals, before a vocal drone, handclaps and a simple bassline come in. Its perhaps the most Krautrock moment on the album, reminiscent of POPOL VUH, before the rhythms and melody dissipate into the ether as the track segues into 'Magnetophone 8 PtII', a slow building and intense piece with a fantastic distorted guitar climax boiling over into a wash of reverb drone. 'What will always be PtII' is the most beautiful track on the album, worthy of JACK ROSE or any other of the current cream of the solo guitar raga worshippers. No sooner have we grown accustomed to the beauty and light however, we find ourselves in the company of 'Angel #7', alone in the woods, the cries of the night creatures piercing the ringing in our ears. Its a strange journey indeed, full of many conflicting emotions, but one that you will instinctively take again and again. May it never end.
"a real beauty. Throughout there is mostly Ben's acoustic guitar picking - elegiac ragas similar to James Blackshaw. Side 2 opens with the meditative "Smoke & Flattery" - singing bowls, grizzled oms and incense-wreathed atmosphere. The rest of the side continues in cosmically dazed fashion with the next track sounding like Led Zep's more enchanted and folkier moments on the falling into the bliss of sleep. Highly recommended." - BOA MELODY BAR

BURIAL HEX
'Initiations' CD
Clay Ruby. (feedback, voice, PAIA 4700, samples, microphones, homemade oscillators, metal, organs, earth, distortion, delay, insect, reverb, electric piano and analog tape)
Burial Hex first made itself known to Aurora Borealis a few years ago when browsing obscure blackened electronic treats online. The subsequent purchase delivered a rather bizarre cassette tape, totally without markings, and a cryptic, darkly printed simple cover bearing ancient symbols and occult schematics: "Curses of the Earth" indeed. It conjured all sorts of imaginings - nocturnal rites, lonely vigils with archaic analogue equipment, moonlight, madness...
In 2007 Aurora Borealis found itself face to face with Burial Hex across the strings of the ether, in communication via email, almost wholly by accident and coincidence. Taking this to be a sign, perhaps the hand of destiny, a deal was secured to release something. More instinct than reaction, no one knew what to expect. The "oppressive necro electronics" of the recordings heard so far gave little idea of what lay in store, of the new depths to be explored, the madness to be embraced.
"Initiations", the debut recording for Aurora Borealis, is a lengthy proposition. Clocking in at one hour, thirteen minutes, it represents a journey, a metaphysical odyssey of uncertain outcome. From the psycho-religious clamour of 'Will to the chapel' with its jihadic cries, through to the somnambulant, subterranean oscillations of 'Eight pentacles', the way ahead is far from clear, the atmosphere claustrophobic and threatening.
'The river of Los' showcases a new breadth of vision for Burial Hex with layers of undulating analogue synth and gentle percussion, an opiate addled take on the horror electronics hinted at previously, and perhaps an indication of things to come. This long track takes the listener on a river journey, part Apocalypse Now!, part Orpheus in the Underworld, submerged in Carpenter's dense Fog, slow moving discomfort and ague. The album ends with the half speed collisions, static miasma and white noise squawl of 'Bo -II- Ne', the listener deposited on shores unknown, prostrate at the feet of the infinite mystery.
Burial Hex has surpassed all expectation with "Initiations": Kneel, o ye acolytes, before an astral-industrial opus of vast depth and occult magnitude.
CD in printed card packaging with spine, with two inserts, in poly bag.

BURIAL HEX /SILVESTER ANFANG
split 7" vinyl
In celebration of the UK tour we present this gem, a split 7" with one track from each entity.
BURIAL HEX stuns the listener with this ultra harsh, brutally rhythmic piece 'Throne'. Screamed vocals and sheer cliffs of noise and feedback fight with
a rhythmic pulse, total necro Power Electronics. 6:46 playing time.
The other side sees 6:32 of pure heavy psychedelic guitar mantra from SYLVESTER ANFANG II, renamed here due to the increased line up now including Ernesto of BEAR BONES LAY LOW. Pounding drum patterns, multi layers of
ethereal vocals, analogue synth and soaring wah guitar shred your mind as the ANFANG take you into new realms with 'Offerbloed Van De Maansekte' (or 'Sacrificial Blood Of The Mooncult' to the non-Flemish speakers). Ttal trip!

DEAD RAVEN CHOIR
"My Firstborn Will Surely Be Blind" CD
Recorded in Poland on cheap and archaic Soviet Bloc technology,"My Firstborn Will Surely Be Blind" sees DEAD RAVEN CHOIR
in full throttle audio assault with total disregard for all conventions of audio fidelity, with great songs of the 20th
Century by artists diverse as Townes Van Zandt, Richard Thompson and Cole Porter torn limb from limb and dragged through
Smolken's forest home. Curiously upbeat in parts, though with harrowing and bizarre artwork.
"A ghostly fog. A hollow sonic death rattle: Doom with pneumonia" - THE WIRE
"A fusion of folk and country song templates and trebly, bass-deprived black metal sounds... Triumphant" - Boomkat

THE STarGAZER'S ASSISTANT
"The Other Side of the Island" CD
"We find no vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end"
- James Hutton, Theory of the Earth, 1795
Deep underground, life moves slowly. Once teeming with
insect and amphibian life, the great swamps of the
Carboniferous era were buried under the weight of 300
million years, eventually returning to the surface as coal. In
this new form they would be consumed in fires and furnaces
for three thousand years before blackening the lungs of
Empire and driving the Industrial Revolution. It was then
that James Hutton, the first geologist, began to consider the
depths beneath our feet and the unimaginable abyss of time
that they represent. This is the world of The Stargazer's
Assistant. This is the forge of the Earth. This is deep time.
The Other Side Of The Island is the soundtrack to the
sculptural works collected under the same name, both being
the work of David J Smith. In addition to his percussion
duties with Guapo, Smith has spent the last two years
bringing his visions to life; life that emerged slowly,
painstakingly, out of wax, coal, copper and lead. In much the
same way, the soundtrack itself slowly writhes organically
before the listener: the groan of the motherlode, the shifting
of tectonic plates, the song of the Earth's crust.
In collaboration with longstanding musical cohort Daniel
O'Sullivan (with whom Smith plays in Miasma & The
Carousel Of Dead Horses) and audio engineer Antti
Uusumaki, Smith has created a strange work comprising of
layered vocals, percussion, electronics and prepared strings.
The Stargazer's Assistant offer up the soundtrack of eternal,
elemental labour.

Silvester Anfang
"Kosmies Slachtafval" CD.
Silvester Anfang hail from Flanders, channeling an ancient spirit of blasphemous anarchy, transposing the nameless fiends of yore as free-flowing ritual psych occultic Flemish rock. Kosmies Slachtafval (trans. "kosmic slaughterhouse sweepings/debris") sees Silvester Anfang in dark, post-krautrock, heavy jam mode: guitars, bass, keys, flute and percussion combine with vocals to create a doomy funeral psych rich in the textures of ritual and worship.
Through a series of cassette tapes and CD-r's released in micro editions, the arcane Belgians have garnered a fearsome and mysterious reputation for dark intense musical outpouring and idolatry. We are very proud to foist their first ever full length compact disc release onto an unsuspecting public.

Jesu
sundown/sunrise EP
JESU creates yet another epic record, Justin Broadrick marrying his
trademark bass-heavy riffs with an almost Phil Spector-ish pop sensibility creating anthems of melancholic euphoria.
Half buried clean singing collides with speaker rattling low end, blissed out
humming resonance and machine beats to create an otherworldly ghost pop.
The Sundown/Sunrise EP picks up where 2006's Silver EP left off, this time
taking two songs and stretching them out over 35 minutes, mixing the
bittersweet melody with huge swathes of oceanic drone and minimilist
electronica - this is by far the most accomplished and ambitious that Jesu have sounded to date.
Tracklisting:
01. Sundown
02. Sunrise

KTL
s/t 2LP
Threatening new collaboration taking in parallel worlds of Extreme Computer Music and Black Metal. KTL is Stephen O'Malley (SUNNO))), Khanate) and Peter Rehberg (PITA).
A six part collision amongst the increasingly fading prescences between the light and the dark. This work came about as the two were composing sound and music for a piece by Gisle Vienne and
Dennis Cooper, entitled 'Kindertotenlieder'. Pieces were recorded in a resistance fortress in southern France during a thunderstorm. Others in a wintergarden drenched in the sunlight.
Amazing collaboration between Peter Rehberg (PITA) and Stephen O'Malley (SUNN O))), GINNUNGAGAP).
Distro LP version on black ("night") vinyl, edition of 700 in this colour. Comes in double printed inner bags, in a double printed
deluxe gatfold jacket with an A1 poster on heavyweight paper. FINAL COPIES.

L'Acephale
"Mord und totsclag" CD.
Epic & violent Black Metal with an extremely intellectual edge, from Portland, Oregon. Acephale; from the Latin a-cephalus, headless or without a chief.
Taking their moniker from George Bataille's political and cultural
journal from the late 1930's, Portland, Oregon's L'acephale have
created a ritualistic totem that stands as "a war machine against
received ideas".
Formed in 2002 and conceived originally as a one man project,
Set Sothis Nox La birthed a sonic Lusus Naturae of Herculean
proportion, taking equal inspiration from the current wave of
Eastern European black metal (including Drudkh & Hate Forest),
the more experimental approach of post-industrial neo-folk
(Waldteufel, Toroidh etc.) and cultural writings & philosophies
from neo-paganism through to the surrealism of the Inter-War
years.
Following on from other USBM ubermensch like Weakling,
Wormwood, Leviathan and Wolves In The Throne Room et al,
L'acephale create a heady brew - blasting whirlwinds of frenetic
energy combine with more measured and eerie passages to
create something potent, original and devastating.

TENHORNEDBEAST/MARZURAAN
split CD
Aurora Borealis is proud to present this split CD by two of the lesser known greats from the Northeast of England. TENHORNEDBEAST is the dark vision of Christopher Walton, part of the much feted ENDVRA, masters of 90s dark and occult ambient.
'Law of the needle', clocking in at over 28 minutes, is an oppressive opus of doomed drone, both monolithic and multifaceted. Pure power. "elongated, sinister drone, ...distant, echoing string resonance from bowed guitars and cold, steely walls of distortion"
think the good folks at Boomkat, as well they may.
MARZURAAN contribute 'Into countless battles', 13 minutes of narcotic guitar haze. I think this is my favourite of anything they have done to date. So good, you never want it to end.
The gruff metal grunts of the 'Solid Wood' LP have been replaced by a subdued, almost crushed vocal, totally stands out. "acres of textured guitar, low end pressure and brooding drums" say Boomnkat.
Can't wait to hear more from MARZURAAN - this is epic, like a bassier, looser, Mogadon dosed JESU with a man past caring roped in to give his thoughts on where its all gone wrong.
Pete from MARZURAABN did the artwork and layout. Printed on heavy textured card and with 2 diecut runes. Comes in a pvc bag.

MOSS
"Cthonic Rites" LTD triple LP
FINALLY.... Aurora Borealis is extremely proud to present the vinyl edition of 'Cthonic Rites' in this limited and deluxe edition.
The debut album, split across 4 sides of vinyl, "one riff per side" being the idea, especially mastered to push the vinyl format to its very limits. Deluxe heavyweight gatefold with all new art. Also includes new inserts, one being a
massive A1 format heavyweight poster by Justin Bartlett (that's 59 x 84 cm).
This is tghe triple LP version so it also contains a clear vinyl LP of "Live Burial" in its own printed inner bag. This legendary recording was circulated back in 2004 as a CDr edition of just 13 copies. Its a 4 mic recording live from the
reharsal dungeon and is possibly my favourite of all MOSS recordings: raw, brutal, unearthly, even psychedelic, its an incredible document. Again, this was painstakingly cut so as to push the vinyl format to its very limits over the two tracks:
1000 Lashes (12:16)
Necrolatry (23:39)
All sets also come with 2 pin badges.

WOLFMANGLER
"Dwelling In A Dead Raven For The Glory Of Crucified Wolves" 2LP
FINALLY.... The vinyl version of the critically acclaimed WOLFMANGLER meisterwerk, presented here in an ultra deluxe double LP version.
Heavyweight gatefold in a poly bag with black and metallic silver cover sticker. New artwork graces the inside gatefold, a literal interpretation
of the album title: a grim forest filled with crucified wolves and dead ravens by art genius French (Blackest Rainbow, Heroin skateboards, etc).
The vinyl itself is presented as a double LP, with side D containing two previously unreleased tracks, 'King Guthrum' and 'Herbst'. The edition for sale here at
AB is limited to 300, "camo" vinyl. Essentially its something of a blend of transparent green and solid brown and not necessarily recommended for military or sport
hunting usage. As if this were not enough, the set is completed with two posters printed on newsprint-style recycled paper. One features the cover artwork by Alexander Tucker,
the other depicting the gatefold artwork by French. Quite a package, attempting to do justice to the monumental sounds etched in the vinyl.
"Doom fans should start getting giddy now - Wolfmangler is the forest-dwelling pseudonym of a certain Smolken,
the Polish political migr probably best known for his work under the Dead Raven Choir moniker. Sometimes connected to the mysterious
Jewelled Antler Collective, Smolken spends his time flitting between peculiar full-moon avant-folk and God-bothering black metal evilness
to devastating effect. However, Wolfmangler sees both leanings combined - we have the sentiment of black metal embedded in a thick mire of
droning forest sound, which some describe as 'death folk'. The result is utterly captivating and sounds unlike anything else you have
probably ever heard, with distorted double-bass drones, pagan percussion and fairytale flutes bubbling beneath Smolken's strangled groans.
Imagine if Deaf Center were making black metal and had some help from Fonal records' folky beauty Islaja and you might be able to get an
inkling of what Wolfmangler are going for... but you'll probably have to be sacrificing a lamb at midnight on midsummer's eve to really
achieve the 'feeling'. This is demonical sound, and in its lack of the usual extremity you might expect from Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone
and other such Northern European evil folks it becomes even more frightening. This is the sound of your darkest nightmares, and as we
all know - darkness is more beautiful than most people give it credit. Don't be afraid, or you'll be missing one of the grimmest treats of
the year!" - BOOMKAT

WOLFMANGLER
'Dwelling in a Dead Raven for the Glory of Crucified Wolves' CD
Smolken of DEAD RAVEN CHOIR returns with 6 forest dirges. Perhaps even more lumbering and grim than the acclaimed split with MOSS?
'Dwelling in a Dead Raven for the Glory of Crucified Wolves' "follows the chamber doom quartet lineage of their previous
releases, the bass/bass/double bass here being augmented by what
sounds like a flute and maybe a French horn. And a big drum. The drum
and flute give songs...an almost Korean court music
feel, but the French horn pulls the soupy bass throb closer to Noggin
The Nog territory. There's also a kind of Ray Harryhausen feel,
something reminescent of the awakening of a plasticine dragon or the
approach of clunkily animated skeletons holding swords, maybe one
skelly has one of those spiky ball and chain thingies. If you could
sonically render the effect of heavy rags being hypnotically stirred
into a cauldron of molten pitch with a severed antler this is the
sound you would get. " - PLAN B magazine.

VILLAINS
"Drenched in the Poisons" CD
Epic filth and metallic depravity from New York City. Their debut full length, "Drenched In The Poisons" conjures up the danger and proud unholy spirit of early metal and acid
punk. A vomitous fornication unto the whiskey whores and foul souls passing out in the dark. These eight aural lashes
come at the listener criminally intoxicated and definitely not nice.
Dirty metallic onslaught highly recommended for fans of early Bathory, early Venom, Abigail, Barbatos... You get the idea. Hammer of the posers.

WRAITHS
"Oriflamme" LP
Haunting the dank crypts below Edinburgh's cobbled streets,
Wraiths seek to reify the shambling masses abandoned by God
during the plague-years of this fog-bound city. These two tortured
priests take the hymns of their past lives and pervert them into
vast walls of howling sound; a blood-flecked gobbet of phlegm in
the eye of their one-time Lord. Playing instruments as broken and
wretched as their own decaying bodies, Wraiths conjure their
blasphemous noise with no assistance from the modern world's
difference engines and thinking machines.
Wraiths are the horror of infection.
None shall escape the harrow of the plague.
Recorded live and under ritual conditions, Oriflamme was Wraiths'
first creation. The insanely limited CDr release was quickly
consumed by collectors of the truly profane and now this vinyl
presentation has been ordained by the ghastly monks themselves
in conjunction with Aurora Borealis. Blackened death-ambient
drone meets howling, metallic noise.
Transcribed directly from the C60 tape used in the original recording, this
vinyl version of Wraiths' Orflamme is a black monolith of utterly corrupted,
pre-industrial plague-noise. Unsanitised, unsterilised and unhallowed - this
is Oriflamme how it was meant to be heard with tape fluctuations, collapsing
band members and malfunctioning equipment intact.
"Death ambient textures and shifting, acidic tones stretch across a punishing forty minutes, maintaining an
evolving narrative of painful, cumulous distortion" - Boomkat.

Presented on 180gm black vinyl housed in a heavyweight matte sleeve, with obscure imagery and illusory ageing, limited to 500.

KNIVES OV RESISTANCE
"Prisca Sapientia" CD
"An end-times opus, inspired by John Dee and Karlheinz
Stockhausen and their quests to find the hidden truths
of the universe, through schismatic means. Knives ov
Resistance entreat the choruses of Enochian angels -
to the human ear, this resembles Popol Vuh's scores
for Werner Herzog, or a more restrained Godspeed You Black Emperor"
Excellent CD debut from this collective. Found sound, samples, orchestration and guitars ebb and flow across three long tracks. An aural journey of 35 minutes.
"This pan-European group of tape manipulators and guitar explorers have delivered something peculiarly beautiful to Aurora Borealis, an industrial folk album that harks back to the playful, pastoral era of Cosmic Couriers as well as the more recent Jewelled Antler Collective discography.
Opener 'Rosicrucian' swells with spiral-picked melodies and thin electronic tides, evoking the serene cosmic folk of Witthuser and Westrupp. Elsewhere, the synth pulses and samples of 'Sovnig' shimmer amid the heat-haze of interlocked guitar mantras, grazing and unhurried.
Knives Ov Resistance's gentle methods are more akin to long-lost troubadours such as Tom Rapp than Boards Of Canada; the mournful closing track 'Outremer' roars with operatic vocal cries and radio dispatches, the tendril-guitars diffused and murmuring. A precious and elegant debut." - Rocka-A-Rolla

AKITSA
'Goetie' CD
Reissue of the 2001 album from this French Canadian UGBM two piece. Dirty and metallic, basic, repetitive.
More guitar based than some of their other albums, but still very hateful with harsh vocals. Its quite mid-tempo too, and
I guess its pretty lo-fi, but this release is better produced than many of their others.

ALETHES
"Aletheia" CD
"Arising from the verdant soils of Cascadia, Alethes bring us their epic debut album "Aletheia". Originally conceived as ritual, these are five timeless compositions comprised of
mournful and warm acoustic guitars, shamanistic percussion, classical strings and deeply ancient vocal harmonies. Digging deep into the Earth and reaching ever higher to the Heavens
in the eternal quest for illumination. Alethes emerge from tradition and disappear into Nature's shadows, yearning for a time past, or yet to be, where the ancient fires burn bright
and the cycles of life are awarded their proper respect. This is a truly stunning craft folks, filled with deep healing...We strongly recommend!
This wonderful debut original pressing features black foil stamping on obscure black leathery stock!" - Glassthroat.

ALKERDEEL
"Luizig" CD
Reissue of the long-sold out demo tape that Funeral Folk put out in an edition of 66 copies [and was proudly sold on this very site]. These guys are getting a real name for themselves in the metal underground and this is a statement of intent that justifies that! This is some of the most filthy, disgusting stuff I've ever heard; one long track that goes from all-out black metal fuzz to passages of total low-end DOOM to seriously disturbed ambient passages, all sounding like it was recorded on somebody's Walkman in a dungeon somewhere. 20-odd minutes of totally harrowing bleakness. True Belgian nihilism!!
Great three-panel foldout silver-on-black screenprinting by Tetedemort from France, all in a thick PVC sleeve. Grim artwork by the late great Aubrey Beardsley. 500 copies.

ALLERSEELEN
Hallstatt CD
The Allerseelen CD Hallstatt contains thirteen brand-new apocalyptic and passionate songs about love and
death. This release - musically situated somewhere in a terra incognita between folklore, krautrock,
metal and industrial music - is inspired by the beautiful Upper Austrian village Hallstatt which belongs to the world cultural
heritage due to its amazing tomb findings of the Hallstatt culture and the unique ossuary with the painted skulls. The songs have
lyrics and vocals by Gerhard Petak and R. N. Taylor from the legendary CHANGES. These apocalyptic industrial folklore songs about love and death were
recorded in 2006 and 2007 at Haus zur letzten Latern. The voice of R.N. Taylor was recorded and engineered by Bob Ferbrache at Studio
Absintheia. All recordings were digitally remastered by M. Presch. All lyrics and texts were translated by Simon Collins (Zero Tolerance)
and Gerhard Petak. The photographs were taken by Gerhard Petak in 2007. - These songs are dedicated to those who decided to disappear
forever in the mountains. - ".. and shimmering, a drop of blood fell into the wine of the lonely one .." (Georg Trakl)

ALUK TODOLO
'Descension' CD
"The first full-length shows the band developing the esoteric theorems established on it's debut 7" and going far deeper in the methodical
exploration of the occult powers of musical trance. With the goal to create a timeless, organic mixing of krautrock's strangeness and black
metal's coldness, Aluk Todolo conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars, subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre,
magick summonings. By reducing psychedelic improvisation to a bare, telluric instrumentation, and basking in the archaic rawness of lo-fi
production, the trio elaborates on an audio ritual meant to be monolithic and stabbing, hypnotic but unpredictable, minimalist yet teeming."
For their playing unites Krautrock with Zeuhl via classic No Wave, and rocks mightily. This power trios time-honoured guitar/bass/drums
line-up is outstandingly meditative and un-clichd. Very Cleveland, very Can, very This Heat, very Magma, but very much its own original
thing, and definitely another necessary part of the puzzle that leads us to the Rue dAwakening." -Julian Cope / Head Heritage
Good stuff indeed, but I actually prefer the seven inch. Maybe I need to give this more time, maybe I just dislike change?
UPON FURTHER LISTENS, I CAN CONFIRM THIS IS INDEED A BANGER.

AMBER ASYLUM
'Garden Of Love' CD
San Francisco's Amber Asylum return with their first new recordings in nearly five
years . Five dark, brooding chamber works of misanthropic resonance and chilling
emotional beauty. A blackened neo-classical masterpiece following their previous
recordings on Relapse and Neurot as well as their acclaimed collaborations with
Neurosis, Swans and Jarboe amongst others. Just under half an hour of new recordings,
featuring the bonus soundtrack recording, "Serenade".

the angelic process
"coma waering" CD
RESTOCK "Dense waves of crushing warm ambient drone propelled into the glare of a dying sun. A constantly shifting sculpture of swarming, celestial dissonance and violent sonic beauty. 40 minutes of layered hyperkinetic eruptions and shimmering
white noise from the same universe as My Bloody Valentine, Swans, Merzbow and Jesu."
People have been going nuts for this, as well they should. Excellent stuff sitting between the realms of shoegazing dreaminess and crushing metallurgy. There's also a tape he did on Crucial Blast that's worth tracking down.
Highly recommended.

ARCKANUM
'Antikosmos' CD
"Austere and mesmeric, ARCKANUM's fourth full-length album is charged with dark energy and otherworldly power. A dynamic and emotive evocation, "Antikosmos"
reflects Shamaatae's worship of the anti-cosmic Old Norse religion and his workings of the dark runes. Eight complex and chaotic compositions are delivered in the archaic Runic language, a wrathful tongue which lends might and majesty to the black magical formulae. The result is a heavy and deviant brew. Channelling thursian powers, Shamaatae's dark vision surpasses all others as he leads us through ancient woodlands, where past, present and future collide in a swarming maelstrom of anti-cosmic energies. Hail Ragna Rk!" - Debemur Morti
CD in a fancy DVD size super jewel case. Great album, mixture of styles from more noise/black ambient based stuff like the intro, through to classic DISSECTION riffing and some mesmeric
classic BM a la SATANIC WARMASTER. Has a 'vital' feel too it, perhaps ironic given its anticosmic stance, or maybe it is the will of his intent coming through in the recordings. Recommended.

ARKTAU EOS
'Mirrorion' CD
Presented in seventeen chapters that can be approached as singular gateways or a slowly unfolding journey of epic proportions, the debut album of
ARKTAU EOS is a challenging, complex work. Born of intense private musico-magical sessions held in places abandoned by man and further refined in
the temple-laboratory of the duo, it is the distillation of seven arduous months of work.
As the title suggests, 'Mirrorion' is the music of stellar light thrown down from the Heaven's zenith and its eldritch reflections in the depths below,
uniting atavistic elemental noise with serene passages of crystalline, spectral ambience. Ultimately, 'Mirrorion' seeks to surpass such earthly definitions
in favour of a non-dual vision of reality, hopefully transforming the listener in the process.
For this recording ARKTAU EOS have favoured an organic approach with majority of instrumentation being of acoustic variety,
including the unearthly choral of the kanglings, piercings blasts of windbones, accelerating steel-plate rolls, singing bowl and various kinds of
stringed instruments.
Comes in an six-panel, A5 booklet. Limited to 1000 copies. Aural Hypnox, Finland.

ASHES
"Yggdrasil" CD
Third and final album from this British UGBM legend. This time with some folky elements and some clean vocals, inspired on sylvian aesthetics and Nordic mythology,
but otherwise it is as with the previous album: raw and cavernous and extremely distorted Black Metal, purely and strictly underground
in sound, conception, and character.
Track list: Yggdrasil/Fenrir Unbound/A Darker Horizon/Ecilpse/The Last Embers/Snow/Sorrow Monumental/Until all is Dead/Ashes
Quite metal rather than BM, total BATHORY worship.

ATAVIST
"ATAVIST" CD
"Atavist is the sound of every conceivable negative emotion channelled through the medium of cranium- crushing doomed despair. Ungodly vocals are pitched against unholy foul sludge with bass levels tailored specifically for maximum bowel demolishing discomfort.
This is essential for fiends into: Corrupted, Khanate, Eyehategod, Grief etc.. Features Burning Witch wardrummer Jamie "Boggy" Sykes. Released in Europe via Invada records.
"Atavist are from sunny Manchester and their critically acclaimed debut album features 3 extended tracks of dark, grimacing, doom ridden metallic sludge. The first track on offer is cleverly titled 31:38 ; a half hour droning jam, harnessing all the finest elements of drone-rocks greats
(The Melvins, Earth, Sunn o))), Boris etc) and injecting enough intelligence to put it next to even heavy post-rockers Pelican for scope and vision. In fact the album reminds me very much of Oceans debut record on
Important not too long ago, large mutating compositions moving slowly (but surely) from place to place keeping the listening interesting but always deep, dark and heavy! A hugely satisfying listen, Atavist have the power, and they aint afraid to use it!" - INVADA
PELICAN NECK / BOOMCAT

ATAVIST
"ATAVIST II: RUINED" CD
"Divided into chapters, but works best as one long song (kinda akin to Corrupteds El Mundo Frio), II:Ruined is a massive plunge through crawling and pounding vibes of distorted madness, bass-heavy frequencies, methodically played drums,
and utterly painful virulent vocals, all filtered through pure unbridled atmosphere and ambience. A sonic scenario where every negative emotion conceived manifests into beyond epic
proportions. Featuring guest appearances from CRIPPLED BLACK PHOENIX founder Justin Greaves (ex-ELECTRIC WIZARD/IRON MONKEY), and UK alternative singer Rose Kemp,
II:Ruined will definitely appeal to those who worship at the altar of such bands as those that Justin Greaves was formerly of, alongside acts like KHANATE, SUNN 0))), and
CORRUPTED (in which Atavist could possibly be the heirs to said throne, or maybe the UKs answer to Corrupted!) respectively." - INVADA.
I would also add that what makes this so great is the diversity on offer here, its a very multi-dimensional album and all the better for it. The production is also killer.

AURAL HOLOGRAMS
'Vol 1' CD
"The very first part of the Aural Holograms series incorporates various call and response patterns manifesting vibrating,
subtle energies, all of which have been accurately divided into separate rhythmic dimensions and time-shifting aural tapestries.
The overall experience - i.e. the ecstatic effect - is transmitted by the intensity of syncopated rhythms, reed organ lingering on a few
tones, self-transforming vocal work accompanied with carefully chosen oscillating tunes and a variety of percussive patterns utilising
artefacts crafted according to the methods of traditional metallurgia, as well as real-time tape operations."
Great Cd and great package from those fine Finns of TIERMES and allies.

BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL
'Birds Sister Blasphemy' CD
"Oh dear Lord... NO! Just when the heavy meds were kicking in and I was beginning to think there might be some kinda
universal point to all this working and eating and sleeping, Birchville Cat Motel re-adjusts the good/evil ratio back.
Thanks. No really, thanks a lot. You'll no doubt be as delighted as I am to hear this is NOT the new Black Boned Angel album, i
n fact Mr Cat Motel himself told me this has "more to with W.A.S.P, 'Kill Em All' styled too-tight denim, and big white sneakers
than the ceremonial pre-historicism of the current neo-doom movement". PRE-HISTORICISM?! What a dick. These prowling, growling eruptions
of frantic thrash'o'delia will surely attract babes like a burning tyre scented aftershave. Is that a twin guitar solo in your pocket or are
you just pleased to see me?"
